Mine rolled over 226K this week... ... ... ... ... ... be 230K end of next week... ... ... ... .

Well it sure is NICE that at least some people are getting more miles from the G56... all the problems being reported are starting to get worrisome.

I have ALWAYS liked the way the transmission drives, but I am wanting longevity as well.

I am sure that, like other have pointed out, many of the problems come from carrying a heavy load, but that is why most of bought our trucks.

Also, it seems that maybe bad parts manufactruing might play a part, but that means we owners are facing a crapshoot with a VERY expensive part.

If the NV5600 was still being made, I would well consider the swap at some point.

Some owners can pull heavy all the time and still get several hundred thousand miles out of a clutch and transmission.

I got 302k out of my NV-5600 while some were reporting failures at around 100k.

Luck, driving style, load, engine power, and maintenance all come to play as time and miles add up.

the dmf caused a lot of the failures along with some being shiped low on fluid. the g56 must have one quart over full to cool and protect the front bearing. use penzoil syncromesh oil wrap the exhaust by the g56 and consider trans-cool's. we tow very heavy with the g56 ( 44,000 gcw ) and no problems and all over 100,000 miles

I guess the reason the new 6. 7l auto's get the 800FTLBS because the G56 can't handle the load.

Nice write up Eric!!

GM never used the 5600 as a standard transmission option. They did use the 4500 which was similar to the Dodge unit. When GM went to a 6-speed, it was the ZF S6-650, very similar to what Ford used at the time. The 5600 was a Dodge exclusive- hence their demise when the G56 came into being.

I didn't know that. I had read somewhere that initially New Venture was established by Dodge and GM to produce the transmissions for their trucks. I knew that earlier Rams used the NV-5600 six speed and thought the rare GM six speeds were the NV also.

I would have to assume that the transmission in question was subjected to LOTS of extra torque with the programmer and clutch mods. Am I the only one that thinks that this extra troque is the cause of this transmissions early failure?? The 30,000 pound loads and big power must have twisted that aluminum case like a pretzel.

... and that was my initial thought too. However, talking to those who have built a plethora of these transmissions, there seems to be no correlation to these type of metallurgical failures with power mods/gvwrs/etc; rather, it correlates much better with miles and torsional spikes/hammering of the gears without proper-cushioning fluid.

That being said, I'm sure extra power does nothing to extend the life of the G56, but it doesn't seem to be the root cause.

Has anyone else heard about Dodge doing away with Manual transmissions in 18 to 24 months? They're going to say goodbye to the infamous G56.

Your dealer may have insider information from dealer meetings with a regional Chrysler rep or written information from Chrysler and may actually have factual information.

I guess we'll see in a year or two. I would assume Chrysler is experiencing some rather expensive warranty claims history on the DMF assembly and growing tired of the cost and customer complaints. The percentage of manual transmissions sold is probably relatively small now and shrinking since the introduction of the six speed automatics.

Good question for Steve St. Laurent. Hope he reads this.

I sent Steve an email asking the question. I'll let you know what he says.

I am in North Platte nebraska with 213k. Started hearing the howling on the way up here. going to pick up a load in York on Mondayand head back to Texas. will have to have my G56checked for sure.

Okie

OK guys, I made it to oklahoma city, ok and it gave out. Stoped to eat and smelled what I thought was transmission fluid and sure enough it was leaking out of the front of the transmission. Made it to a safe spot to stay the night. I am at Motel 6 north of frontier city.
