Hi all,

My '16 RAM 3550 SRW seems to almost always have a small grind as I shift from 2nd to 3rd. All the other gear changes are smooth and you really cant feel much, but 2nd to 3rd, more time than not seems a little notchy. I typically shift just under 2K. Has anyone else with a G56 experienced this? I've had several 4th gen RAM's, however this is my first G56. Also, I did switch out the ATF to Amsoil synchromesh at 700 miles.

Does the grind go away if you shift at higher RPM's? Did the grind start after changing to Amsoil?

Strait synchromesh is too light for the G56, just as ATF is. I use strait Mobil Delvac synthetic trans fluid 50 and overfill it by one quart. https://mobildelvac.com/en/automati.../mobil-delvac-synthetic-transmission-fluid-50 As far as your slight grinding when going from 2nd to 3rd seems abnormal. Sometimes I find myself sitting farther away from the clutch pedal at times and grind a little during a shift and I end up adjusting my seat forward a little as well. I'm not saying your doing that, but it's something I find myself doing, adjust your seat a little and see if that changes.

Yes, if I shift a little higher in RPM range it seems to slide into 3rd easier. This may not make sense but, almost feels like the synchronizers aren't spinning fast enough(if that's how they work), when I'm below 2K RPM. If anything the AMSOIL has been an all around improvement. I knew I was going to dump the ATF when I ordered the truck, I talked to standard transmission in TX, they recommended the synchromesh over the MTL(I think) as they think the MTL is too thick for the tight tolerances of the G56.

Mine and my friend's have done that from new. The added hangtime seems to influence it. I have to delay my 2-3 upshift for a second or two. It does this irregardless of fluid.
I've never tried the increased rpm shifts.
When cold I drive mine in 3rd for a block. Also when i back out of the driveway with transmission cold I have to recycle the clutch one time as the trans gets stuck in reverse. Depressing the clutch an additional time and it slides right out.

That's good to know. Other than that, I love the trans. My wifes cousin has a '09 regular cab with a G56, he's very hard on things and it's lasted 186,000 miles with still the original ATF in it.

Mine has shifted a lot smoother as the miles have increased. It really began to get better around 75K or so.

Occasionally when cold. Synchronizers spinning might be the cause? I think the G56 is a synchronized transmission? Seems to be.
Doesn't happen enough to cause me any concern. Pretty rarely, actually. Still have the original ATF+4 in it. I plan to install FAST cooling fins when i change the ATF4+ summer 2017. And add an xtra quart of ATF4+. Probably will go with Amsoil ATF4+ unless someone has a better suggestion.

I had a 2007.5 that would grind going into third, especially when cold. I found the best solution was double-clutching. That eliminated the grid.

G56 is a good transmission.
Not if you compare it to an NV5600, where Hotshotters routinely pull over 30K GCW. I'd be weary to try that in a stock G56, and to do that in G56, you'd have to go to a SMF dd clutch and install a girdle to keep it from flexing, even if you keep it cool like mine. Otherwise it's adequate.

I double clutched it several times this morning, went right into 3rd very easy. Wouldn't think you would have to do that, but it was smooth.

None of my previous 3 Dodge Cummins trucks were great shifters. At least when compared to a small car or pickup with a manual transmission. Seems like changing oil types helped, but what helped the most was being patient and not speed shifting. Shifting improved after transmission warm up also.

That's very true, my NV5600 was very notchey until warm. Because I had a 4X4, I would warm it up with the transfer case in neutral and the trans in 4th gear. I never do this with my G56 because it shifts much better cold. These trucks with manual transmissions are not meant to be shifted quickly. Slow your shifts to allow the synchro's to slow down the gear before going into 3rd and see if it feels the same as double clutching. Check this animation video out it'll help in understanding synchro's
