I have not been able to find anything along this lines in the archives...

I may have the oppurtunity to purchase a gauge cluster that is out of a boat. They are all brand new. With the cluster comes the ammeter, oil pressure, h2o temp, tach, speedo, fuel, and something else? My question is about the tach. It is a VDO (they all are). Will it work on a diesel? I am thinking not but would look forward to the input.

I figure that if I can get all of them for $25. 00, it may be worth the hassle. Even if I can't get the tach to work I can use the rest in my truck. It may be a cheap way to get basic guges in there, but it'll work. I love being a "hill billy" as my future step-children refer to me, as.

Thanks in advance.

You can use them ,but as for the tach..... it'll have to have a signal from the crank sensor or alternator. What is the tach's pick-up like?

Doc,

For $25, get 'em!! I hope they're sayin' Hillbilly with a smile! ;)

Scott,

Are you going to be having a different trivia in your Sig Line each day?? If so, I'm going to collect them all!!

Greenleaf,

I am unsure of the arrangement on the tach. I didn't want to look too hard as I was doing the ole "shuck's, well maybe I could use that ammeter but the rest of them would sit on my shelf gathering dust" thing. I didn't know you could get a signal off the alternator... See you learn somenthing new each day... :D

TBP,

Yeah, they say it with love. I am such a departure from their father that it sometimes throw's them and I don't think they know what to do with me> :D

Ya gotta love kids.

Not all marine tachs use the alt signal... . If the VDO tach is from a modern diesel, it likely uses a sensor on the flywheel.

If it's for an older diesel, it likely uses the alt signal. Most marine diesels have an "R" terminal on the alternator.

WSe don't but you can remove the back cover and attach a connector and wire to one of the rectifier leads and create one.

That's what I did to get a signal for my early 91.

If the tach doesn't work out for you send me a pm I could use it for my boat.
