2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission gear shift lever

I installed a new gear shift lever on a 98 Dodge. I remove the lever with no issues but my question is the spring behind the lever. What way should the spring be(front to back , side to side??) It was kind of twisted when I took the lever out and now the new lever wont fit back in the slot correctly.
