Rednut, it might be easier to remove the elbow from your turbo, then slide everything forward. Especially if you've never had the muffler off, or it hasnt been off lately.
This is what I'll end up doing.

WD,

Don't remove the cat. They do a visual and check for it. You can gut it though.

Rednut,
I loosened the tailpipe/muffler as a unit. The pipe joints are crimped hard at the factory and may be difficult to separate. I used a die grinder with a cut off wheel to split the outer pipe on each side of the crimp. Mine came off fairly easy, but my buddy's '94 was a SOB.

briand, Who and where did they do a visual on the cat. Was it a random check or emmisions certification? I need to know more about this as I'm pulling cats part of the time and gutting them the other. Was this just in Colorado?

Stab,

Colorado's emission test program which if you live along the front range is a once a year.

They do an underhood visual and a visual for the cat.

Easyest way to remove a cat or muffler is to heat the ends almost red with a torch and give it a wiggle. They will come apart clean and totally reuseable if need be.

All right guys! Does anyone honestly believe that the monkeys who work at the DMV Inspection Stations know whether or not a diesel needs one? Remember, there was none until mid 94, then none mid 98 on. In NJ, I pull up to the emissions dyno, the guy says "Diesel-Move on to the next checkpoint", and that's it. I have no cat, no muffler, a 6" exhaust and she's loud. I work in law enforcement and there are no Motor Vehicle statutes on the books concerning Diesel Exhaust except for: No visible smoke at idle, exhaust noise within REASONABLE levels.

I gutted the cat, took a pod rod, sledge hammer, and knocked the crap out of the insides,,,, I did remove the cat first!!
mine was plugged pretty bad, previous owner had the star wheel turned all the way up,, should not do this with a cat that has guts!!! the carbon will plug.
engine pumps a lot easier now with the gutted cat, if the engine can't pump air, you have a problem.

Has anybody passed the Colorado Emissions test with a gutted cat (& the motor turned up)?

Or maybe you know someone else that has? #ad

Pete
