Houston, I have a problem. Well I seems my Getrag is a well Toast. I just bought the truck, and Was told the clutch was out, NOPE WRONG ANSWER. It soulds like a bad pressure plate however it's cominng from the transmission. I pulled the drain plug and got lots of metal shavings. Also looks like the transfer case has bad bearings at both the tail shaft and going to the frount rear. So what now, Should I start calling junk yards to see if I can find anoutherone? See if I can get this rebuilt? or find something else to put in it? I'm tring to get this together for my crew cab convertion

Mike

Metal fragments equals very bad but the first thing you do is look. Take it out and evaluate what you have as to the transfer case and the transmission. The 4x4 is notorious to eat the Getrag but who knows till you tear it down. If it is trash, you can find plenty of info on the conversion to NV4500. Since you plan to run 4x4, that will be your best bet in the long run. I HAVE seen a 4x4 getrag that was buildable. So good luck.

Well, you can get the rebuild parts from Standard Tansmission, Drivetrain.net,

or Quad 4X4..... you can find rebuilt G360's on Ebay... or you can go with

a NV4500 conversion... all three of the earlier mentioned companies do that

as well... . regardless of which way you go it's a pain and it is expensive...

the rebuild kit for the Getrag has all the synchros and bearings... but,

you do not know what was eaten up in there as well. Depends on how long

you want to keep the truck and how attached you are to it. A NV4500

conversion will run you around 2K or better. . even if you source out all the

parts... plus it's just good sense to replace the clutch and pressure plate

while you are in there... at least $350. 00 for that. I wish I could give you

better news... . you can go with a reman G360 and trade yours in for a

core charge... that would be the least costly way to go... until you start

figuring up that you will have to do it again... Do you tow allot? Are you

hard on your truck? If so then you better go for the NV4500...

I have a 38' tri axle fith wheel trailer that I tow every now and then, and I like to play evey now and then so your saying I should be looking for a nv4500. I definatly want something that will last.

Thanks

mike

Yeah, if you like the truck and don't want to be back up under there

in another 50K miles or so doing the exact same thing then Yeah,

a NV4500 is the way to go..... the converstion for a 4x4 is easier than

a 4x2 try and follow these links...

http://www.quad4x4.com/NV4500HD Conversions.htm

http://www.standardtransmission.com/

http://www.drivetrain.com

http://advanceadapters.com

Advance adapters sells the bellhousing kit for your conversion. Quad

4x4 sells just about any part you would need for the conversion plus the

conversion itself. Standard and Drivetrain reman trannys and they source

Advance for their conversion kit. All of these links will give you all the

info you need to do the job. It is possible that you could get this all

done under 2K if you can souce a reman NV4500 (make sure it has a

fully splined 5th gear shaft and upgraded 5th gear nut) and they will

accept your G360 as a core... I have seen NV4500's on Ebay for 1200 or

so... but, then there is shipping... the conversion kit from Advance runs

about 450 or so... so, it could be done for under 2K... . read all the links that

I sent you and research them... so that you will know exactly what is

ahead of you. All of the links will explain exactly what you will have to

do for the conversion... . my favorite would be Quad 4X4... good folks

to deal with and they do the conversions themselves and have every part

that you could ever imagine (no affiliation... just my experience during my

conversion)..... good luck and keep us posted on how this goes.

Ok, Is it worth paying $3500 for quad4x4's Nv4500 hd touque king? I can get a junk yard nv4500 for 1500 and a locally rebuilt nv4500 for $2000 + 500 core charge. SO I guess what I'm asking is there transmission worth $1000 more than a standard nv4500?

I Live in montana so this place is less than 5 hours from me.

Let's see... . you got 1500 for a junkyard NV4500... . then 2000 for a reman

NV4500 (less 500 core charge... )... Well, what you have is for 2500 or

1000 more than a junkyard NV4500 ... you got a reman unit that has

a warranty... that will have the fully splined 5th gear shaft... . and 5th

gear nut... . and a limited warranty... either 12 months or 12K miles... .

the reman unit is one that someone has gone thru and said... okay. . let's

see... this has to be replaced... and so does this... and this will pass for

a reman... . It's really a roll of the dice... either you gamble with the

junkyard transmission... or you spend 1K more on a reman with a warranty

... . are you young. . handy with tools... can afford to have your truck down

for awhile... need the cash?... are you older... can't spare the down time. .

really only want to do it once without having to worry about being stuck

on the road... ... . it's up to you... sure, you could wind up with a really

good transmission out of the junkyard... . then again... shortly thereafter it could

crap out... . there are no guarantees with a reman either... . if it craps out

though... you got a warranty... at least you won't be out for the cost of

a transmission... . tough call..... When I made the decision to go with a Reman

NV4500... I had the time... I had the cash (not that I wanted to spend it

on a transmission but, it was worth peace of mind to me not to have to worry

about it)... . I like the tuck... want to keep it for a long time... and just

want to be done with it... not that I do not mind working on my tuck...

but, being on my back in cold weather wrestling around with 300+

pounds of metal strikes me as more of a commitment than a hobby... .

... Your call... .

Ooooppps... and 3500 for the Quad 4X4... . well, that is a tough call.

The locally reman unit may not have the 5th gear upgrade... . you

will have to ask. I have seen NV4500's on Ebay for 1200 with a

500 core charge... but, who are you dealing with? Is it the real deal.

Does it come with a warranty. I am not sure what Standard is getting

for just the NV4500 reman with the 5th gear upgrade. You will have to ask

QUad 4X4, why exactly is their unit 3500 bucks... and they will tell

you everything... and I do not believe they will steer you wrong... .

but, it may be more than what you want... thereagain it's your call.

3500 is allot for a NV4500... at that price you are approaching the

cost of a NV5600... . and that is tough to beat... . as a newsflash to

everyone... I heard that New Venture (NV in NV4500) has shut down

production of the NV5600 and they will source their trannys from

somewhere else... . so, no more NV5600..... If I was going to spend

3500 on a transmission it would be the NV5600 with the larger input shaft... .

But, that is my personal opinion...

i am in the middle of doing the conversion now this is the point i am at

i was going to go with quad4x4 but opted to do it with out a kit but

have still given quad some of my money at this point i am not 100% sure

how its going to work out but this is what i am out so far

1800. 00 nv4500 with bd shortshifter and bellhousing, clutch/slave master cylinder, throwout arm rear trans mount (transmission had fully splined mainshaft and updated 5th gear

47. 00 from advanced adapters for the transfercase linkage

(i do not like the set up so i ordered quads its not in yet so i have not seen that)

from quad i ordered the throwout arm ball stud and spring kit 12. 00

6 quarts of the syntorque fluid 100. 00

transfercase shifter set up 75. 00 (nv4500 to np205)

the gasket from transmission to transfer case 6. 00

the reverse switch 19. 00

i ordered a fast cooler 94. 50(i ordered 2 but 1 is going to my dad 189. 00 w shipping)

i have the by pass filter from the old getrag new filter and gasket 9. 99

(the kit was 29. 95 when i bought it)

filter will go on passenger side and cooler on the drivers

i spent big on the clutch from south bend 999 plus a 300 flywheel core charge

a 2nd generation starter got it from another member for 75. 00

a new rear main seal i think was 35. 00 could be less

the engine to transmission adapter for the 94 up trucks 70. 00 with shipping

that is the point i am at i do have some pictures if you like let me know

the trams is not in yet but the adapter and starter are

I am a little curious as to why you went with 6 quarts of Syntorque... .

the manual calls for 4 quarts to fill... . is it recommended to have

6 quarts instead of 4 quarts? or is the extra for your xfer case?

due to the fast cooler and oil filter add some oil capacity

Okay... . was worried that maybe NV4500 guys might be doing like

G360 guys and putting in an extra quart or two in the transmission...

but, that explains it.

Personally, but this is too little too late, I'd stick with the Getrag, or go to a NV5600. The 4500 is only a little bigger than the Getrag, plus has its own problems with 5th gear, which have been covered here. The main problem with the Getrags, from my understanding, is they dont like huge amounts of throttle at <1500RPM, and they like to be full of oil. My father burned up his Getrag, but never changed the oil in it, and was (still is) in 5th by 35mph w/3. 54s. Mine has 150K mi that I am aware of, the 45K before I got it was with the same oil, possibly longer. It is starting to make some noise if I get into it at lower RPMs (peak #s- 22psi boost @1600rpm; 35psi at 2100), but once again, I am responsible for it. I think it could benefit from a synchro and bearing kit, but the oil is clean when I change it (or it HAS BEEN), and I change it every 20Kmi. Overfill by 1. 5qt of Rotella 5w40 synthetic, and go.
