Huge swings in fuel mileage

Who makes good head gaskets?

My Getrag that just died rattled 24/7 at pretty much all speeds and RPM's. It was a never rebuilt factory unit that made it nearly 200k it's at 188 @ time of death.

The reason mine died somehow it blew all the oil out and overheated the bearings. I tried to catch it and I thought it was OK but it only made it about 200 more miles back into town before it started making enough bad noise that it was apparent it was going to have to be rebuilt.

My wife's getrag just got rebuilt less than 5k before we bought the truck and it sounded the same as mine. I swear when I take mine apart I'm gonna find a spoon. Hers also will grind going into the 5-4 shift and 3rd feels spongy as heck.

On both of my trucks I did most of my driving in 4th as it's the only gear that dosent rattle and make funky noises.

The local NAPA can't seem to find the Transfer case adapter gasket. Neither can Orielly's:rolleyes: I thought so. So to Dodge I go, maybe. Would some permatex work in this situation??

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about. Sorry it is kinda blurry.

Steve, yes permatex would work, but it sounds like you're doing a class A professional job so I wouldnt cut corners. I'm a firm believer in gaskets. That is, as long as you can get it from Dodge. If not, some good high temp permatex should be fine. Sounds like your doing the job right, so this should turn out well. Keep us posted. Bill BTW I own no stock in fel pro gaskets.

I don't think using permatex would be "cutting corners". I used it between the NP205/NV4500,and no leaks to report. You don't need to use a whole tube in this area,so that it squeezes out all over... . Is that what you meant by cutting corners?;)

I figured I'd raise some eyebrows with that comment. Like I said, I'm a firm believer in gaskets. Even though I havent been using them lately, only ultra copper rtv. Just in my mind I feel I'm cutting corners, too lazy to run down to napa for a gasket. When I use gaskets, I also use rtv on both sides of the gasket in most cases. Ok let me retract my comment of using permatex is cutting corners. Since on the last two transfer case output seal repairs, last 4 differential services, and one getrag top cover removal, I didnt use a gasket, shame on me!! I used ultra copper rtv. Bill

I may go tomorrow and try to get the gasket from dodge. If not I'll use some permatex. Thanks

I am kinda frustrated, I ordered a shim kit and some snaprings from ManTrans and I got them today. WTH! The shims are definitely not the right thing, too big. The snaprings do look like some of them are the right thing, but some of the smaller ones have been used. Guess I may have to send it back and see if they can get the right ones. It would be real nice if somebody had rebuild kits with everything in it, so I don't spend time hunting for small parts.

If ManTrans still can't get the right shims, does anyone know where I can get them?

Thanks, Steve

Sure... ... ... After a little pressure the TRUTH comes out... :-laf

You should run for public office..... :p :-laf

My Bad

oops, I may have opened my big mouth(keyboard?) too soon. The shims may be too big for the countershaft bearing preload, but they might work for the mainshaft?! DUH! Me ith stooopid:rolleyes:

BUT, I still don't have the countershaft preload shims! Gets more and more confusing.

Thanks Steve

shims

Steve, I know you would like to have some shims laying there ahead of time but get it together and see. I have on occasion had some left from the original setup. That may be the case for you with the new bearings. I will look this morning and see if there are a couple in my HOPE box.

Yes and hopefully that will be enough. Did you get the KD 2012 tool for the snapring. It will tame the beast.

No I don't have it, but I would like to know what it is exactly and which snapring it is for.

Thanks, Steve

KD 2012

The big snapring in the front of the case at the countershaft bearing race. The tool uses a threaded mechanism that opens or closes the snapring (internal or external). They took a screwdriver handle and threaded rod and worked it into a set of snapring pliers so that the mechanism is very stable. Maybe NAPA has a picture of it. There may be some tool specialty outlets on the web that have it pictured.

I guess I am supposed to make a disclaimer like I don't have any KD stock or something. I don't. But I like the tool better than any I have ever had.

I think I know which one you're talking about, the one under the plug. It weren't too bad. :D

I thought about posting a pic of the big 1st gen, the getrag and me in the shop, but I figured my ugly mug might scare somebody off. ;)

Thanks, Steve

I finally got to the dealer, they had the transfer case adapter gasket. In stock  Something I didn't have to wait on for a change, wasn't but $2. 45.

Somehow, we managed to lose one of the little ball-bearings(?) that are part of the locks for the 3-4 synchro assembly. We were very careful with all the parts, but this little booger managed to slip by. It may turn up, but I would like to know if any of you guys have one of these? Maybe out of a trashed getrag or something. Or if not, where can I get one, or a whole lock assembly.

Heres a pic of what I am talking about. [/IMG]#ad

Hey Steve, I know how it is when you are trying to "get rolling" on a project and you have a few delays, but, if they don't have an answer right away, let them try to get it for you...

I'd much rather have someone tell me they're not sure and they'll go find out, than have a BS answer that steers me wrong...

That's how I treat customers who call and speak to me... . if I don't know, I go find out... you get the benefit of a correct answer and I get to learn a bit... it's always worked for me...

BTW, isn't 1400 RPM a bit TOO low an RPM for 4th gear to begin with???? just asking... under what conditions do you need to run that low in 4th?? I dunno. .

Steve,

Ball bearings should be available at any industrial supply place that I mentioned in my earlier post... measure what you have and buy a replacement (or all 3).

I'm there a lot...
