My Getrag that just died rattled 24/7 at pretty much all speeds and RPM's. It was a never rebuilt factory unit that made it nearly 200k it's at 188 @ time of death.
The reason mine died somehow it blew all the oil out and overheated the bearings. I tried to catch it and I thought it was OK but it only made it about 200 more miles back into town before it started making enough bad noise that it was apparent it was going to have to be rebuilt.
My wife's getrag just got rebuilt less than 5k before we bought the truck and it sounded the same as mine. I swear when I take mine apart I'm gonna find a spoon. Hers also will grind going into the 5-4 shift and 3rd feels spongy as heck.
On both of my trucks I did most of my driving in 4th as it's the only gear that dosent rattle and make funky noises.
