i'm giving up on my getrag and converting to a NV4500 couple questions, how much could i get for my getrag. the case is shot and i the bottom gear had to be cut in to 2 pieces. BUT i have a brand new in-put gear and the top set of gears are fine, got a rebuilt kit and that has gaskets, bearings and i'm gonna sell the bell housing with it. how much is this worth?



also do i need to get a "HD" NV4500? and money is really tight!! i need a trans. cheap but i need a good one.

You will need a new bell housing and the NV4500HD transmission. I got $500. 00 for my rebuilt Gertrag but I held on to it for almost 2 years. Your best bet on the conversion kit is www.quad4X4.com in Roberts MT. Dan owns the shop and has a top flite kit. Since I put mine in I couldn't be happier with it. Good luck.

BYE-BYE GETRAG !!

I just finished the same project on my '92W250. I bought everything from BLUMENTHALS. The trans has the fifth gear update,and they did all the necessary work on the trans to do the conversion. They get the bellhousing/kit from ADVANCE ADAPTERS. The only bad part of the conversion was the lack of decent instructions by A/A,but it wasn't too hard to figure everything out. I love the way the truck shifts now ! Oo.
 
On the "what's it worth" question: well, has that input shaft/gear been run? If not you have that new, and an unused(?) rebuild kit, right? So, that's about $450 in parts based on standard transmission's prices. What can you usually get for new parts you bought and never used - half?



The rest of the gears and shaft, probably worth something if you knew someone who needed it. Was it a 2 or 4 wheel drive trans? Bellhousing is worthless in my opinion, especially with all these guys converting.

I wanna join!Oo. Oo. I have had 5 of them in 5 trucks; never had a problem with any of them after refilling w/ 5qts of synthetic. I know of 3 still going strong. Mine's starting to make noise if I get on it at low RPM (like when I'm too lazy to drop another gear around a corner), but that is kind of normal, given the torque I may or may not be producing.

rebuild kit

Andy, I'd like to be a member but I think my getrag is seriously needing some preservation. Had it a little over a year now, empty no towing at all, 5th has been howling since then and NOW 4th is starting to chirp. How much is a rebuild kit? Probly need special tools I imagine. :mad: I need to start a transmission jack fund, so I can pull it down and tear in to it. Bill
 
Hey Bill, I bought one of those trans adapters for my floor jack for @ $60, works great. Last time I looked, a rebuild kit with synchros was $238 at Standard Trans & Gear. If your box only has 126K on it, I'll bet it doesn't need a rebuild. If you drive it untill it goes boom, that's another story.



Sounds like it's doing what my last one did. I would take it out and "field strip" it before I bought parts, if you have a time/place to put it down for service. Look at the rear bearing on the mainshaft (next to 5th gear, hence the noise) with the shaft out, I bet it's fried. Look at all the gears and the bearings you can see, and the sychro rings. If they look okay take a punch and tap that bearing off, get the number off it, go buy the one bearing and some RTV, and put it back together. No special tools required, except a caliper to set some preload. If you need a rebuild, you'll need a press and gear splitters, other than that, the box isn't hard to work on. Get the '93 manual, or at least a copy of the Getrag section...
 
Well im goin to stick with mine. I guess drag racing took its toll 4th gear missing 7 teeth and 3rd missing about the same. But all else is good ill be rebuilding it. Ill have about $475 in the rebuild. I just dont have the $ for the conversion right now. Wish i did though... ...
