Going beyond 6 months

The Radio Flyer is currently at 344,005 miles and 6,270 drive hours.

Since the last post mentioned / referenced cleanliness, I thought I would share a few pics of my engine at 324,532 miles when I had my valve lash set.

For those keeping score at home, through 339,806 miles and 6,197 drive hours, I have done 24 oil changes. That comes out to 14,158 avg miles per oil change and 258 drive hours per oil change. The first 4 oil changes were with 15W40 Rotella-T. Oil changes 5 through 14 were with 5W40 Rotella T-6. Oil changes 15 through 24 were with Delo 400 LE 5W40.

Since we all like pics.....here is a few showing how clean mine is. The guy that ran my valves said my engine looked more clean than a lot of 100k mile engines he has been into before.

That looks brand new. I like your plan to break in with dino and run high quality syn the rest of the way. Syn tends to clean better with fewer additives and provides top quality lubrication.

I keep waiting for a LEGITIMATE reason why you run Amsoil, and then change at the same intervals as one that runs conventional. I think you were waiting for where it said you couldn't run Amsoil , hopefully you got your answer. I am still waiting for mine from you. .

Why do you care why he does it? He's not telling everyone else they should use it and he doesn't need to justify it to you.

Whether you believe it or not, it is a fact that synthetic is a superior oil. Better in the cold, better in the heat and it is also slipperier! Now, that may not be a concern of yours at all, but it is not your money that anyone else is spending on their own oil, so quit worrying about it.

The recommended non-synthetic is indeed "good enough", and one might not notice an obvious difference, but I'm willing to bet if you compared the two oils being in use in the same conditions over a long period of time, you'd find the engine with synthetic would have less wear and likely be much cleaner in the crankcase.

Again, this may not matter to you, but it matters to some people. Get over it.

It is app $100 for 12 qts of Amsoil and 15 dollars for a filter. The 27 dollars for oil analysis is well worth it to me.

I guess you are not using an LF 16035 Fleetguard stratopore or Donaldson/amsoil equivalent?

It you are, where do you find it for $15 (including tax and shipping)?

I buy 2 at a time from Geno's. They are cheaper than NAPA etc. I don't remember the exact cost. I do remember a case of AMsoil costs me $96.00.

Let me rephrase ,what do YOU think the benefits are to YOUR 6.7 Cummins motor running Amsoil ,that are superior to Rotella , Delo, etc etc .

Did the dowel pin on my Dad's 94 with 120K the inside was SPOTTLESS. Did mine at 100K the first 50K had Delo 15-40 and I started running AMZ/OIL 15-40. The inside of the timing cover was VERY streaked with black. Did that mean anything, who knows. My Son did pull the head on my 98, Bill Fletcher actually did the R&R at about 360K the cylinder walls looked NEW and there was SERO ridge. Mean anything, who knows????

I do NOT get oil analysis done. I DO change oil, oil filter and fuel filters at 15K, no matter how many months it takes(usually less than 12). I live in the north and my engine sees more cold than warm (there's 18" of snow on the ground and as I write this it's snowing), so forget hot.

I use Amsoil. Everywhere. In everything I own. Truck, motorcycle, snowblower, lawnmower, small IH tractor. Why? Obviously I like Amsoil. Why?

I started using Amsoil back in the '80's when I had a Honda Accord. Had to adjust the valve lash every 10K miles. From start to finish the top of the engine looked brand new. At that time, I was a gearhead and shade tree mechanic. People would bring me cars that needed overhauling. The worst oil at the time was Pennzoil. Don't know what it's like now 'cause I no longer shade tree.

Anyway, I change at 15K 'cause that's what the EVIC says to and that's what the book says to do. And that's for dino oil. Amsoil themselves say to not go beyond the oil change interval unless analyzed. I don't analyze so I don't go beyond.

Guess that was a little more than $.02. More like $.17. Sorry.

Let me guess.... in the 80's Quaker State was second worse. A friend of mine had a hot rod ruined by oil that gelled in winter.

Quaker State had to pay for it

If memory serves me correctly, it was. Synthetic was fairly new and most people didn't see the benefits. I tried to steer them to Valvoline.

When ever I took a block or heads to the shop that did the work for me, Dave would look at it, shake his head and say "Let me guess. Pennzoil, right? Give me an extra day or two".

Whitewolf is likely the first person that has posted on this thread that NEEDS synthetic oil given his location and subsequent ambient temps. (Just went back and looked and remembered that Todd posted here a few times with his usual common sense - and much appreciated wisdom ) The oil I posted at the start of this thread is a semi synthetic 15w40 which in all honesty is likely as good as most any full synthetic 5w40 when comparing CCS viscosity, and is most definitely better in terms of shear stability and visc retention in extreme high temps. I can purchase it for the same price or less as most name brand dino 15w40 at retail prices. My next UOA will be interesting, I purchased 5 gallons of Mobil Delvac 1300 on sale @ $6 per gallon...and am running it as we speak....it will be interesting to see the results compared to the Schaeffer's.
The one cavet here is I used the last of the drum of CJ4 rated Schaeffer's on the run that I posted, and the Mobil Delvac is the new CK4 which is supposed to be superior to CJ4 in every way. Will post results either way, but it's gonna take a while...I ain't no GSBrockman :-laf

Hmm, let's put this marketing scheme into perspective for a moment.

In the early 70's the average OCI was very likely between 1k and 3k miles....basic FI was the exception not the rule and loose and dirty carb'd engines and heavy fuel ruled the streets.
Let's say 3k miles was the avg OCI. To go 25k miles as is noted in your advertisement can is literally 8+ times the OEM recommended intervals. Putting that into perspective in today's maintenance world where 7500 miles is the norm that puts one in the neighborhood of 60k mile intervals. Loose and dirty math but the comparison puts things in perspective.

Anybody else skeptical of this ad? :-laf

Seriously, defensive . I asked a legitimate question, is this your answer.

Okay, how do I word this so YOU , and your buddy Kthaxton can understand . You pay twice for an oil change, you say you follow 15K or 6 months. I do the same on the intervals.

Why in world would you pay double. Heaven forbid putting words in your mouth. We can dance around this forever, but hell yes you think its a superior oil, you don't have to say it. :roll eyes: Action speaks louder then words.
