I put a new lift pump in last week pressure was weak. Original pump when out at 40,000 and I had the in the tank installed under warranty. The injection pump is still showing codes  It lost power a few times also then picks back up. I got one rebuilt by Bosch for 1180 is that good? Dodge wanted over 3 grand for a new one. It will go in Saturday and hope it ends my problems. How long does it take to swap out 4-5 hours? thanks

A job so fun that when I need to have this done, I will allow someone else to have the joy and pleasure. :-laf

210,000 on my original VP44! (knock on wood)

If anyone is doing the VP44 install and is located in Wisconsin I would help with it and learn at the same time... :D

Vp44

I'm glad I'm not alone now:-laf Got the dead pedal a few days ago and threw codes #1693 and 0216. did much research and found it's going south.

I installed a FASS about a year and a half ago, that was after two factory lift pumps died. It's only got 48,000 on the odo:{ Now it's time to go shopping. Saw one reman for about $1050 from Midwest Fuel injection and one from the dealer for $1800 plus $600 for the core charge. I will go for the best price but not sacrifice quality. What do you folks think?

Thanks,

Phil S

One thing that helps with getting the gear off the old pump is a little heat. Not a big torch but, a little one similar to what plumbers use to sweat copper pipes.

Make certain it is rebuilt by a Bosch Certified shop and bench tested see notes on the link I posted above for Thoroughbred

Thanks Joe,

I did check out the link. Looks like a good deal and warranty too!

I also looked at Blue Chip Diesel. I am doing a lot of comparison shopping so-to-speak. just want to get a good pump and not spend an arm and leg:) I am not hesitant about doing the swap myself, saw the gear puller on Blue Chips web site. Thats what I'd be after too.

Thanks again for the link!

My mechanic did it today. Used a small puller (Cummins tool he borrowed) and the gear popped right off. The whole thing took 2. 5 hours as I watched. Started at 11 and was done by 2 and was handling at least 30 minutes of other customers in between. He really doesn't like working on diesels but did it for me. He was not charging me for this which I enjoyed but I'll make him take 250 as I was glad to get it done. It was the first one he ever did and it went smooth. Pump had a sticker on it re-manufactured

by Bosch USA.

One thing that had some rust was the line from the filter to the pump so we cleaned it up. It was not scaling or anything but I will order a new one Monday. Weird because with all the miles I hardly ever saw any water in the filter and I changed it every 10,000 when I dump the oil. Once their may have been an half of eye dropper full in their.

We didn't have any new washers for the back of the lines but they were OK. I was getting 216 code for pump misfire. It ran 10 days after the new lift pump then just died briefly (3-4 seconds) so we checked it again and it had the code again. Glad I didn't get stuckOo.

Now I am debating a small box for power. I was looking at the Smarty Jr. I want to leave the truck stock the only other thing it has is a Banks exhaust. I may put an exhaust temp gauge it with the box. Not really even interested in a air cleaner. transmission was redone at 105 and it is beefed up converter and they said as long as I didn't go wild in power it would be fine.

thanks for the help and the ears:)

I have done vp44 twice, not to hard to do at all. A rather easy just time consuming job. Lets put it this way, I'd rather do a vp44 over injectors on a 7. 3L ford hahaha. :p

The VP44 out now should have new computer and updated parts to be an 027 or 028 pump. I sell 5+ a week. You should be able to get them for right at $1000

JKidd, are those numbers referring to the pump keyway?

Was curious because I just got a reman one yesterday (IPVR-17X) and was scoping it out real close before I go and install it and noticed the keyway on the reman pump is an 030 (the old one a 028). The reman pump has numbers stamped on the top boss area close to the front that are 036. Whats the deal here?I read in the FSM that the keyway MUST mach the numbers on the pump. Do I disregard this and just put it in? This reman pump just has a small plate with serial number and model of pump and thats it. The question here is do I or don't I have the correct keyway for this pump. I hear that the pumps are updated with new parts and some electronics, Yes? So maybe you or someone can shed some light on this cause I shure as heck don't want to have it all back together and then throw codes and run like crap.

sorry I did not get a notification. I'm sure you are taken care of already.

SO= the 027 is the last 3 digits of the bosch part # cummins # ends in 15x
HO= the 028 is the last 3 digits of the bosch part # cummins # ends in 17x

Keyway that comes with the pump stays with that pump.

yeah these things are a different bird. have a buddy that is a diesel tractor mechanic bought a 01 ho new newer a power adder, had fuel psi guage since new and fass with filters since about 10k pump died at 51k just the other day at 10 years old. and i have a 99 53 block that is on the origional pump with 245k on the clock. so who knows about these things. ??

vp-44 replace

When I did my 44, I looked and was convinced that Blue Chip was the good way to go and Chip will loan you a gear puller and only charge you if you do not return it. Being a machinist, I copied it so I now have one and I will loan it if necessary. Chip has a great set of instructiions with his reman pump and I can't see how anyone who has ever picked up a wrench could go wrong if you pay attention and do not drop the key. Make sure you start by turning the engine over b y hane after you get the nut off of the gear and have the keyway up! I was 2. 5 hours and had to rebuild the broken support bracket in the process. According to Chip's instructions, you only have to take the front injector tubes off and this saves lots of time and "IT WORKS"!!

Good luck
