I absolutely love it. This truck is giving high mpg on road trips with respectable mileage towing and awesome power......the only hitch in my giddyup is this thing roaching an injector pump in the middle of Canada and me ending up with a 5k dollar tow bill. As long as it fails in a friendly country, no problem!
I love my truck as well. :)

They do have that option, trade it in on a 21.

Honestly if you’re that concerned about the CP4 I’d go trade it while it’s worth the most it ever will be.

If I had the money I would. All the equity went bye bye into this one....I'm not "that" worried about it. I just like the feeling of knowing the CTD is virtually bullet proof.

Yep, LOL, they are great! We camped for a week at Surf Junction on Vancouver Island many years back and it was just awesome! They got a sub-species of wolves that scavenge the beaches. There is another campground (Mussel Beach) that is really off the beaten path, 100% off grid, generators and solar. Coolest place. It's so far off the beaten path every once in a while they post a sign on the road so you don't turn around and go back towards civilization. "Just a little farther". I wonder if salmon fishing is still awesome up there around Ucluelet and Tofino? Man that's a long time ago.

Salmon fishing is still good for Indians and lawyers.

We did around San Juan Island in NW WA in September for Coho's

Not scared at all. I’m not ready to loose my clutch, gain the emission equipment and I’m really not happy with the management and it’s direction at this point.
I still to this day kick myself in the ass for getting rid of my 2005 3500 6spd with 4:10. It pulled the RV fine, not fast but always steady. May of had to turn on the heater going over hills in summer time, but a small price to pay for a good 5.9 stock.

Sounds awesome.

What kind of tune where you running to need to turn run the heater on a 5.9 with 4.10’s?! Surely it couldn’t have been stock, as that’s far more cooling per hp than a 6.7 has.

Even before improving my fan with UDC Pro I never got too hot towing heavy with my 05. That was with a decent tune too.

It was stock, but I was at 25000+ in GCVWR weight. If I climbed the Tehachapi mountains (hwy 58 to I-40 ) etc, the engine would go up well over 220 with no decline in sight with 100+ temps outside. In Arizona, as you know, 110+ can be average in a lot of areas where with the AC on, climbing a hill could send the coolant climbing. One way to pull 10-20+ degrees off was heater on full which as soon as I saw the temps go up I did...Maybe not needed, but never overheated. The 2020, barely ever goes over 210 pulling a hill, full throttle with 18k. But its rated at 34500 trailer, 43K gcwr. The 05 was 23K max gcwr

I’m going to guess something wasn’t quit right with the 2005, as you probably shouldn’t have been pulling much over 215-218°. The 190° thermostat used, in both the 2005 and 2020, cracks at 190°, is full open at 207°, and has a max allowable temp of 225°. I would see 215° on my 2005 towing up a 6% grade on a hot summer day at 20K lbs and making around 130/300 over stock power. The only time I ever saw hotter was with a jet ski mounted on my front receiver blocking most my airflow and pulling a 6% grade at 65mph around 20K GCW. That was also before I modified the fan programming. After modifying the fan programming the hottest I saw was 211° regardless of ambient temp, elevation, grade, or weight. I often pulled hills at 90-100% power on my tow tune that made 415/850 to the ground. Despite the differences in GCWR the 05 and 20 have the same thermostat and the 05 had a larger cooling system. The 20 does have slightly better fan programming thou.

The 6.7 holds over a gallon less coolant in the block, so between that and the EGR cooler runs hotter. 213-215° is pretty normal with a 6.7 and any decent load up a decent grade, but they rarely get hotter with the fan operational.

What kind of grades are you pulling with that 20 that needs WOT at 18K GCW? Or are you simply playing with WOT? If so, odds are good the power isn’t sustained long enough to develop higher coolant temps.

FYI, GCVWR isn’t a real term. I think you mean GCW (Gross Combined Weight).

On the 20, yes WOT to see how the temps would react. Camp Verde hill s/b on I17 is a long pull and you will routinely see pickups on the side of the road and semi's overheating in summertime. Was more of a comparison for my own knowledge then anything else.
Surprised to hear the 20 has less coolant then the 05...I figured the 20 would have more with I think almost twice the torque and big bump in HP. None the less, the 20 stays cooler all the way around compared to all the others I have owned.

I havent read thru all the above threads so this may have already been mentioned..the cp4 was introduced on 2019 models and seeing they had some problems they improved the cp4 on the 2020 models and then went back to the cp3 for 2021 models. The oringinal cp4 has 4 dimples on side of pump and the improved model or version two has six dimples. Have no clue of what was changed on version two.

I finally went thru some videos last night and actually saw one, I think S&S that showed the internals of the CP3 and CP4... The CP4, if I followed the video correctly, (and I'm SURE to be corrected forthwith by the fellas here on the board if wrong) had little ,excuse me if my nomenclature is wrong, pistons that had a roller bearing that rode a cam lobe. If i heard correctly, the little pistons are not in a fixed position and can rotate sideways causing the roller bearing to ride longways on the cam lobe, thus causing premature wear and possible/probable failure....The CP3 on the other hand internally looked like a foolproof system that did not depend/require roller bearings and if the "piston" moved around on the cam lobe would not affect anything.. That left me wondering who thought up this design.....No wonder FCA went back to the CP3. smh.

I would like to see how a CP4 piston and roller can turn in the bore. I would have to say it's impossible based on the load on the roller and piston.
Look at Issue 106, page 110 to see how wide the roller is.
