2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission GoodYear Wrangler Silent Armor ProGrade or Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S?

I want to hear your experiences with either of these tires. I have tried to research as much as a can on the internet about these two tires, but to read the reviews on either tire, it seems like some people are talking about two totally different tires when they are reviewing the same one (e. g. -- the Wrangler rated quite well on TireRack's comparison, and the reviews on there were postive, but then elsewhere I read that they cornered bad and were separating on people. )



I am currently running bald Yokohama Geolandar AT+IIs (235/85R16, load range E), which didn't last worth beans (approx. 27,000 miles). With rotation and proper inflation, they wore quite evenly, and never made a lot of noise, but they sure didn't last. One of them has a chunk gone which is showing the cords. I don't do any extreme fourwheeling and I don't have enough power to even break the tires loose at launch with a fuel tank and toolbox in the back.



The new A/T-S model has a 40,000 mile treadlife warranty. The Wrangler Silent Armor Pro Grade has a 50,000 mi warranty. What kind of life have you been getting on either of these tires? How about handling? It sounds like the Wrangler has quite good traction.



I need to get some new tires pretty quick, and I would value your thoughts.

I've had the Silent Armor on for about 30,000 miles and they are wearing well. Good tire for hauling my 5th wheel and handle well on paved roads. In my experience they have very POOR traction in even light mud, snow, or ice situations. The treads fill quickly, the voids between the lugs don't clear, and you just spin. In fact, I've driven my 2WD sportscar past my truck that was stuck in 1-2" of mud or snow on the gravel driveway. Had to jack it up and place wooden timbers under the tires and drive it off.



Since the 5'ver is parked for the winter, I swapped-in a set of aggressive mud tires for the remainder of winter, and have the Wranglers sitting in the garage until it's time to drive the highways again. Probably will replace the Silent Armor with something else when they wear out.



But that is my experience, 2wd truck w/LS diff, and a very wet winter season. As they say, your mileage may vary.

I have a set of different Yokohamas that have worn even, but not lasted long. I have also run different Goodyears with the same results. I will say that a friend went with the pro-grade Wranglers and loves them. Quiet, long lasting, with enough traction for what little he does. With 4wd shouldn't be a problem. The only problem-cost!! Not sure what the Geolanders run, but the Wranglers were up close to $180 installed per. Good luck, maybe you can find one of them on sale.

I have wore out 2 sets of Goodyaar Silent Armors and I feel they are the best tire I have found. I get 50-60K out of a set and my truck weighs 10k all the time. The tires corner well, drive straight, and wear even. I have tried off brands, Aurora's, Yokohamas, etc. and got 15-20K out of them. The Wranglers will cost more, but its worth every penny. Traction wise, I have had no trouble, with 4wd and the weight. They wear well on gravel roads too, I drive nearly half of my 50K a year on gravel roads. Been a great tire. If you need traction and have no weight, go with a 235 or a 245, not the 265's that I have. From my experience, the narrower the tire, the better in the mud and snow.



I just bought a set of 17in rims with BF Rugged trails on them, I am interested to see how they will wear.

I has silent armours on my truck when I bought it(used). I put 20K on them after I bought the truck. I now run Michelin LTX M/S 265/75 16s. I love them. I ran a set of Maxxis in between. Don't waste your money on them. I got a whopping 16K out of them. The Goodyear is a good tire.

Does your choice have to be the Goodyear Silent Armor or the Yokohama Geolander? Why not consider Michelin, Cooper, Bridgestone or Toyo.



My 95 Dodge (sold) came with Goodyear Wranglers, not the Silent Armer, which last 60K. I've had great experience with Yokohama, not the Geolander, which were also excellent and long lasting.

I have the Silent Armor Wranglers. Before I could spin my tires pretty good, wet or dry. I have not hydroplaned in this truck since getting them. I have the 265/75/16's. I don't worry about losing traction with these tires.
I have towed my 8K trailer a few times no issues. So far 24K miles, rotated every 5-6K miles. I love them. I will definitely buy them again.

I have a few buckets of sand in the the back and with the winter we have had in NH I have only used 4 wheel a few times. (Because I need to replace the front u joints AGAIN bad vibration, my fault) Would reccomend them to anyone.

I have the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor, in non-ProGrade (weren't in stock) and I love them. I got them on at 95,000 miles... . I now have almost 121,000 miles. I have towed about 9,000 miles with them... . my boat, my Airstream and my gooseneck horse trailer. They wear beautifully. I got caught in that nice little ice storm in Indiana in December and the tires performed very well. I have no complaints, and when the time comes I'll be putting on another set. Michelin's perform very well too... that's what I had on my 2005 2500, until I went to the Power Wagon BF Goodrich's... . those are the three tires I'd trust on my truck.

Great tire, strong and good looking. So far have 15k miles on mine and they are doing great.

the 285's did cause a slight drop in milage but i don't even count any more. at 3. 73 a gallon i don't want to know how much i would save runing a gasser(Shame on me for thinking that way)

I put on goodyear silent armor this fall, they replaced m55s They have been fantastic. Ive had the michelins and the toyos, these are the best in snow so far. No rear axle hopping, the truck is fairly comfortable on greasy roads in two wheel drive, excellent in four wheel drive, no singing, and handle deep snow well. I will buy another set.

Sorry for the delayed response. I have been busy for several days and haven't had a chance to respond. Thanks for all the replies so far!



My choice does't have to be either the GY Silent Armors or the Yoke A/T-S, but I was not impressed with the traction of the Michelin LTX tires on my bosses truck, plus they cost an arm and a leg. I would really like a set of Toyo M-55s, but can't afford them. The Geolandar A/T-S are in stock for a decent price installed at the local TDS dealer, and they have a 40,000 mile warranty. The Wrangler Silent Armor ProGrades have a 50,000 mile warranty and looked like about the best match for what I wanted based on the comparison rankings on TireRack and a couple other online sites. TireRack also had a pretty good price on them last time I looked.



That isn't a whole lot of research, but that is kind of why I narrowed it down to those two tires. I want a tire with some kind of treadlife warranty, which seems to be harder to find when you get into truck tires--the last two sets I've owned didn't have any and I'm tired of getting burned with tires that don't last despite trying to maintain them.



It sounds like a lot of you have had good experiences with the Goodyears--has anybody run the Geolandar A/T-S for any length of time?
