I'm not doing the spring kit after talking to Mark Chappell. He said it changes the fueling and i'd most likely need a bigger plate after the change. The 12 valve was designed for 2300rpm and the cam lobes might go flat prematurely also. I'm happy the way it is! Craig

I talked to him yesterday and he didn't say anything like that to me, I ordered the kit!

Now on order, TST #4 plate kit, 370 Diamond B injectors, Afc spring kit, Gov. spring kit.

Cam lobes going flat, uh oh I'm in trouble now. #ad
I think you must have misunderstood Mark, he also just orderd a dozen kits, including one for his cherished old 94. Obviously mechanical things only go up & down or round & round so many times before they wear out & if you were to run at 3500rpm all day your engine would'nt last as long as if you ran it at 2000rpm. But if we all worried about that there would be no bombing going on, as more fuel will also wear things out quicker, higher turbo boost puts more strain on the engine and turbo. Ya gotta live a little #ad

I'd like to hear more feedback from anyone that tries the spring kit. Do you need a bigger plate, etc. I'm not in any hurry - I don't use my truck much in the winter. If the kit works good, I'll put one in next spring. Craig

Everyone says they run better with the spring kit, so it doesn't make sense that it would take a bigger plate to get back to the prespring kit fueling. Also, rpm isn't NEAR as hard on a cam as loose tappets or floating the valve train!

How high can you take the RPM's to?. Can the engine run for a prolonged period of time at higher RPM's (3200-3500). As some may know, Bob @ Scheid Diesel is building me a 24V ISB with a P7100 mechanical pump, He is well aware of my application and the need for higher RPM's so I can only assume he is using a Piers spring kit. How high can the RPM's be taken and for what period of time?
All answers appreciated.

Craig:

Scheid Diesel just installed the
governor spring kit in my truck.
The difference it makes is really
amazing. My truck now pulls real
hard up to about 3400 RPM. Read
my recent post in the "12 Valve
Engine and Drivetrain" under the
title "370inj's. ,govsprgkit,AFC
sprgkit. " I tried to explain it
in that area.

Hadi,

When Piers took me for a ride in his truck he ran it up to 4000 in 2nd gear and cruised there for about a quarter of a mile. It felt like it would run there all day.

A question for the guys that already have the Governer spring kit.

Carl has a group discount on Gov spring kits.

Apparently you get 6 new exhaust valve springs when you order the kit.

Did you guys have to replace your OEM exhaust springs with the 60 lb. ones?

Piers what do you mean my engine is going to wear out quicker if I beeeeet the crap out of it? Oh shucks the price we pay for fun. Just a note on the more serious side everyone quit worrying about all these unknown side effects and just do it!!!! Trust me you won't be sorry. Oh yea my truck turned 50k so I ran her up to 3500 to celebrate. #ad

Question for those of you that have installed the spring kit. What RPM are your trucks governing at?

DBR:

I just had this done at the "Scheid
Rally" in Terre Haute, Indiana back
on September 22, 2000. Mine was "set"
at 3400 RPM. The truck pulls hard all
the way up to that setting and I do
not feel I am "losing" power.

BTW, how do you like HX-40-16
housing? Do you have any low end
"lag" at all?

The low end is excellent. I'll be the first to admit that it's not equal to that of the HX35/12 but it is far better than the HX35/16. The key to the whole low-end deal is the 370 marine injectors. I really wouldn't recommend the HX40/16 without the 370 marine injectors, nor the 370 marine injectors and hot torque plate without the HX40/16. One thing I would recommend for the person who installs the HX40 with the 370 injectors is to cover up your boost gauge at first. Having that gauge in front of you showing low boost numbers can play tricks on the mind until you pass the 40# mark on a full throttle run. I have to give credit to Piers for suggesting this combo.

DBR:

Thanks for the excellent response to
my question. I know my signature does
not reflect it yet, but I do have
370 injectors, governor spring kit
and the AFC spring kit.

One more question for you. You
said the "HX-40/16 is not equal
to that of the HX-35/12. " DBR,. .
do you mean that the take-off
is not as good or is it something
else? Thanks for all your help.

Sorry for being vague with my answer. I meant to say the HX35/12 is better for low end in the 1600 rpm and under in comparison to the HX40/16. However the HX35/12 does not even come close to the HX40/16 above 1800 rpm. I look at it as a trade-off, I'm giving up a little low end response for a lot of mid-range hp and low egts. I mostly tow with my truck and can seriously say that I cannot tell the difference between the two at low end when towing, which is all I care about.

DBR:

I just got back on this site after
having posted my question to you
back on the 9th. Thanks again for
all of your input! Like you, I do
quite a bit of towing with my truck
so I guess the HX-40/16 is the way
to go. I was just concerned about
the "off-line" power running with
no trailer, as I drove a 95'CTD
heavily bombed with the HX-35/16
and the take-off on that truck was
terrible! It too was an automatic
so that may be the reason.

Thanks again DBR!
