Lately my 99 has been grinding a little when up shifting from 2nd to 3rd, it’s not that noticeable and does not do it all the time. I changed the oil with factory recommend oil and have seen do difference in shifting after close inspection I can see that one of the pressure plat bolts is back off enough that it is no longer touching the pressure plate could this be the cause of my shifting problem? How much effect would on bolt missing out of the pressure plate really have on the clutch?

This could be the result of a Slave Cylinder that is starting to fail. If it is failing, it might not be able to fully separate the clutch assb. I had a similar problem, and replacing the slave cylinder resolved the issue.

Also, although I have never seen this on a stock clutch, there were some issues with the DD clutches from SBC and the flywheel not being machined properly. As the clutch wore, the rivets on the front disk would come in contact with the flywheel, and not separate enough to disengage the clutch (I learned that 1st hand, but SBC fully warrantied the clutch).

You might try Amsoil. I have an NV5600 and it would grind a bit 2nd to 3rd... changed to Amsoil MTF and it is gone unless I'm lazy on the clutch when it's cold. I know, I know, I was on the fence about a special oil fixing my problem but MTF is made specific for the NV5600. NV5600s have a different style syncronizer than the 4500s... more of a clutch style. I've also read (dodgeforum.com I think?) some guys putting limited slip diff additive (mopar) in the transmission and that seemed to help. The dose was somewhere around 4oz.

I would think if you lost a bolt or something related to the flywheel/clutch, your clutch would be grabby(dunno if that is a word)... like a warped rotor... and it would affect all gears.

If you do change the oil, I would let it work in for a few weeks before looking elsewhere. Slave cylinder or hydraulic oil would be my next move.

I have been leaning toward some kind of hydraulic failure, the clutch seems like has been getting softer. Other that the dealer is there any other place to get the complete clutch hydraulic assembly?

My 99 does this when going into 3rd. It especially occurs when I am in a rush or not giving the job of driving my full attention. I suspect the syncros are bit worn for just that gear but it does not happen if I am careful.....

I like the amsoil idea and plan to try that next time I am doing the fluids...

I have diagnosed that there is nothing wrong with the clutch hydraulics and that the clutch is fully disengaging so that leaves me believing the Syncro for 2nd to 3rd is going bad what kind of job is it to fix is there any special tool or can I just buy new Syncros and putt hem in? It only grinds if it is shifted to quick and only does it on the up shift from 2nd to 3rd no problems down shifting if I shift is slow it just falls in to gear. I might try the oil idea how does LSD additive help in shifting?I’m trying to sell the truck if I was going to keep it I would just live with it until it goes bad

Tearing apart a 6sp is a different beast than the 5... take it to some one that knows what the are doing and save yourself the trouble!

I’m confused are you saying that the 5 speed is harder to do than the 6 speed? I’m wanting to replace the parts in my nv4500 5 speed

If you REALLY want to tear your 5600 apart there is actually a writeup on dodgeforum.

DIY: Transmission Work NV5600

Or if you just wanna sell it, you could try the LSD oil. . I can't find the thread but it was loooong. For the most part, the guys that used it said the grind went away but came back after about a month. LSD works by making the oil more slippery so the clutch style syncros will relax a bit. I think some of them talked to transmission shops/dealer mechanics about it as well. You could try that... call or stop by a transmission shop and ask them what will work. Like I said, the Amsoil worked for me and it works for alot of people but I understand if you just wanna sell it.
