No joke, there is a task force/operation looking for out of state registration on high dollar cars, trucks, and RV's. They had a CHP officer on the local radio station yesterday to "remind" people that you must switch your registration if you recently moved to CA or run the risk of fines and impounding your vehicle. She called it something like alien resident registration. She also asked for people to call in and report their neighbors with out of state plates. Besides people reporting you I'm not sure how they are going to go about doing this. They can't just start pulling over all out of state vehicles for no reason can they? I guess if a cop wanted to be a jerk they could pull over a truck they saw all the time. It is fairly obvious where my parents live in the High Desert. You see brand new trucks with Oregon and Montana plates all the time, but if you have your paperwork straight, what can they do?

I believe they can be pulled over for out of state plates. We had a girl we hired from Nevada, who, obviously had NV plates. She was pulled over within three months and cited for not having valid CA registration. Edit(went and asked her): The officer that pulled her over claimed that they had witnessed the vehicle parked at her residence for more than 2 months, and looked into it. Not sure if a neighbor called and complained, or what, but thats the story.

*I* am not suggesting that everyone will be caught, nor am I condoning the act of tax evasion. I am simply telling you that "YES" there is a CHP task force whose job it is to crack down on it. CA is losing big money on it, and it is obviously in their best interest to crack down on it.

Just don't pi$$ your neighbors off... ... .....

If you have an idea of how many guys are wanting/willing to go through with this, I (we) have a good connection with a dealer here in Orange County who has expressed interest in helping sponsor our local chapter with an event. He has also indicated special pricing on new trucks.

Dkevdog> Well sure they look for it. I mean if you change your drivers license and not your tags they are going to pop you.

If the girl they pulled over handed them a Nevada Drivers license and said she was in town from Nevada visiting her Grandmother now she wouldnt have gotten a ticket would she.

Its really hard for a cop to be able to see through that

She handed him a Nevada license. When you drive around for months at a time in the same area, cops will take notice. Not that they do, but if they wanted to: SS numbers are tied to DL numers, and SS numbers are tied to your paycheck. If you are getting a paycheck from CA and a vehicle/license registration to OR or NV, it doesn't take a Sherlock to figure that out.

I don't intend to argue about it. All I'm wanting people to know is that there is an inherent risk in it.

But what is the risk? You said she was 'cited'. So what does that mean exactly? A fix-it ticket? Was her vehicle impounded?

Ok everybody I just bought a new truck at $1000. 00 below invoice yes $1000. 00 below invoice. Call Eric Todd at Lithia Dodge of Eugene Oregon. The number is (541) 343-1700. NO BODY WILL BEAT THIS PRICE,NOBODY. Beleave me I checked.

What options did you get and what was the bottom out the door amount?? Just wondering??????? I also bought from Lithia back in November. I love my truck, even if there is only one coat of paint on it...

The risk is simple. It is illegal. She was cited for not having valid CA license and registration. She had to register the vehicle, get a CA license, and pay a penalty. This was on an older vehicle. On a newer vehicle, especially one purchased out of state to avoid tax, expect the fines to be worse.

Found a dealer named Eric Todd at Lithia Dodge of Eugine Oregon that will sell at $1000. 00 below invoice. His number is (541) 343-1700, and his cell number is ( 541) 543-6046.

$1000. 00 below invoice

$2500. 00 dodge rebate

$500. 00 farmer rebate

= $4,000. 00 below invoice cost.

Yes, the fines are outrageous! The motor home dealer told me that he has seen people get fined several thousand doing that!.

Not worth it, just pay the tax. I would hate looking over my shoulder everytime I drove my truck.

I heard lots of conflicting stories and here's what I found on the CA DMV site.

When you bring a car from out of state into CA you have 20 days to get it registered or else you're in violation.

In California the fines are as follows:

40% of the use (sales) tax owed (if the vehicle has less than 7500 miles).

40% of the license.

If Oregon catches you they will immediately cancel the registration, keep whatever money you've paid them, and contact the state where you are.

All things considered you're risking about $1200 to save $3000 on these trucks. Some will take the risk. Others won't. I decided I didn't want to go through the hassle of renting an apartment and looking over my shoulder for 90 days so I'll give Arnold the money. Maybe they'll fix more potholes in my city with the cash :)

I'm with you jeep dude, Its all bull. Someone said they could trace your social security number and see where you worked... ... . HA

You can work in a State and not live there! I guess evrytime a boilermaker goes to a state for 6 months he's supposed to change his tags and all that. Aint going to happen. No matter how hard they try to make it air tight, It has cracks that wont even hold Water.

No matter what kind of ticket you get, they got to beat your "not Guilty" plea. No since even talking about that because you aint going to get the ticket in the first place!

Ok, speaking from experience, 25 years as an Oregon State Trooper.

If someone came to my area (never worked in a huge metro area, always smaller towns etc. ) and had out of state plates on their vehicle. The vehicle would be obvious if seen a few times. It would just take minutes to be able to figure out that they were residents of my state.

And #1, they moved there and had not complied with the vehicle and drivers license regulations or #2 Stupid (they had bought it elsewhere and were Oregon residents) which would never happen as everyone wants to register in Oregon.

It takes about 5 minutes to have dispatch call the school to see if you have children in class, call your work, call your home number that you supply and check with your insurance company.

Face it people, if you are stopped by the police, in minutes your scheme will be done and you will be severely fined and taxed in your own state. I have had many request from CHP to check such and such address and see if so and so lived there. Most times, nope, sorry, never heard of him, or "he is the brother in law but he don't live here" etc.

Take your own chances, but I for one would pay the dues and not be worrying about driving around etc. every time I went out.

IMHO

I believe some states have a bounty for turning in phonies. So, it might be worth it to your neighbor, especially if you don't invite him or her over for beers and bbq once in again!

Fair enough, since you brought it up.

You as an Oregon state trooper pull over a guy who has Missouri Plates and the thing that makes him stand out to you are he has these two flags on each window -you know the kind that usually have sports teams on them- but these say "TOMEY GUN SAYS (EXPLETIVE) OREGON"

You question him and he says he's single lives in Missouri and gives you some kind of (tommey gun adress)... ...

You know I was going to make it harder but lets stop there!

Are you going to do the things you just said? Are you going to try and talk to his home town police and all that other garbage you said while you are on the side of the road with him? To be fair How many times in your 25 years have you done it?

Its bull plain and simple and I'm deleting my notification on this topic. I'm done talking about it

You don't even make any sense in your reply!

If he has Missouri plates, passing thru? Go for it! If he has been seen around the area for some time, you bet your ass I am gonna call Missouri and track down how long since he lived there.

Actually the problem is with California anyway, people buy Oregon DMV plates and use them in The Great State of California!

And, if you don't believe the CHP and the California tax people don't check up on them, you got another bet coming.

If a Trooper of any state was to stop you and not follow up on where you really lived or whatever, then he would not be doing his job (if he had suspicions, and I for one am not gonna tell you what the "buzz" points are!) so there!

I see that this is going no where. All I can say is everyone pay your tax and plate fee in the state where you reside. Ive had 2 people (from this website) already ask me if they could use my Oregon address to avoid taxes. No way!. My guess is that the penelties work both ways. I paid the high cost of Calif taxes for way too many years. Now that Im retired, im enjoying the state of Oregon. As said by another board menber a few posts above, im done with this subject.
