Went to Orlando Dodge yesterday to see about a 2002 left-over purchase. The salesman wasnt the most wonderful person in the world, to start with. Then, when we started talking trade-in value, he went to his manager and came back with a rather insulting number. Because of it's age, he said a bank wouldn't finanace it, and the large mileage figure hurt as well  . The salesman went on and on about the 'sales incentives' right now, with this back, and that money back, etc..... and in the end, it boiled down to their generous offer of $5000 off sticker and my truck was worth between $10-11k!!!!!:--) !!!! Anybody out there know of a worthwhile dealer that works in OUR reality? I am willing to travel for the right deal. Thanks in advance.

Brian, you may flame me,but i think that is a fair deal. If you want more for your truck, sell it outright, you and I both know your truck is worth at least 16000 if its real clean. They will wholesale it off in a matter of hours after its traded, they wont get much more fthan 12K for it,they just want it gone, and the money. Its too old for them to retail sell anyway,to much risk of something breaking on it. Also you save sales tax on the 12K trade in,this makes the trade worht almost another grand. % ofgf off the new one is about the going offer,IMO. Shop around, see fi you can get a better offer on your truck. good luck

I thought if it's within 7 yrs old and in the NADA book it would bring a good tradein. Find a dealer that sells close to invoice and it will already be about 4-5k less than sticker. There,s one in OK that advertises in the RV magazines - Chaperall or something like that. Craig

I agree in that they should be taking at least 8k off the sticker price. To me anyone who trades in an older CTD is a fool. I was thinking about trading in my first gen, they offered me 3k. I said WTF. I almost had to hold an auction. I had 3 offers at the same time and ended up getting 6k for the truck and had it sold in 2 days. I looked all over for a truck like yours and would have been happy with the one in your sig depending on miles. I could not find a 96 or 97 anywhere with a 5 speed with less than 200k on the odo. My vote keep your old truck IMO they are the best of the best worth their weight in gold

Brian. . I just got home. . I'll check with my Son tomorrow evening and get you an answer if he is interested or not... head'in out again Wed AM for another week

Brian,Brian,Brian,

You have to play their game. I had a decent sales man I think his name was Aaron Perkins ( black guy look like a small full back) he liked to play the salesman game I just played back.

After he go see the sales manager (a ploy) I tell him I had to get back to work I stop in later in the week. We finally came to an agreement on the price( it took three meetings). Maybe we could of got there with out the games maybe not.

Sales are down keep trying, pick out the truck you like and keep after them. Heck Gibbson truck center will probably end up with it.

Customer just picked up nice 99 2wd LB qc/cc with 50,000 someone traded in at chevy dealer. A family member or friend of the family new he was looking for one and drove it home for him to look at the day it was traded.

Mule is right, you have to play their game. A ploy that has worked for me is to work out the entire deal with a trade-in down to sign the bottom line then say you don't want to trade in, you'll pay the $8k difference. Many times they will have knocked more off the price because they're figuring on selling your trade-in for more than $8k. They'll gasp when you pull this but you're the one in control, walk out if they won't give you the discounted price.

no trade!

BC,I was going to trade in my 96 and almost ended up in a fight with the salesman. The clown tells me the same story about the age and mileage and then tells me it's worth 6 grand! told him i would buy all he could get at that price! then he tries to tell me that he has been selling cars for 8 yrs and has sold 8 thousand cars in that time. if my math is rite that boy sells as many cars a month as most dealers. then he tries to sell me the truck for full sticker!needless to say they lost my business.

When I went to purchase my current vehicle I went to a place where I knew a salesman it was one of those one price places. The offered me 8k on my 96 gas dodge which was immaculate except for 140k mile on it. And being a one price place didn't come down at all on the price of the new one. I was fuming. He even had he me talk to the trade-in guy who explained his reason for the lowball price on my trade-in (which was high mileage). I said seeeeya. Went to the place I bought the 96 when new and talked to them. They offered me 11800 for the trade in and the new vehicle 100 over invoice(about 3500 less than the first dealer). I said ok now we're talking. I ordered my new vehicle from them. While I was waiting for it to come in I thought what the heck I placed an add in the paper for it and it sold in three days for 15k (when setting up the deal I asked if they cared if I sold it myself they said no). The salesman I knew got upset with me because I didn't buy from him. All I told him was do the math. The second dealer was going to give 3800 more for the trade in (which I sold outright for 7k more) and sold me the vehicle I wanted for 3200 less. Gee friend should I give you 7300 more for the same vehicle NOT!!! Been over 2 years haven't seen him since. Moral of this is shop around.

I think 11 grand is a fair price BCFAST. I just bought a 99, LOADED, with 36,000 miles for 20,000 OUT THE DOOR ad a dealer.

Has every available option except leather... And was as clean as it was new... . literally.

Nobody's buying used cars when you can get 0% for 5 years for a new car.

if there is anyone out there wanting to buy an '02 don't buy until you PM me a fellow TDR member who was a dealer helped me get the best deal possible, I know exactly what the dealer will and will not do as far as price goes and can give you real #'s to go in the dealership with so you don't get screwed and don't get confused my their smoke and mirrors

Two things I always do.

I only trade as a last resort if I can't sell it outright. The next thing I do is never ever sign the same day I visit the dealer. I work out the figures then just when they hand me the pen, I say that I need to go home and think about it overnight.

New or used, I have had some sales people get real PO'd at me. I had decided not to go for this one deal and the salesman nearly started begging. Even got a sales woman to try it.

QRT, that is very wise of you, my wife and i have decided that on any decision that involves alot of money it is better to atleast sleep on it over night. It is too easy to get all hyped up and get new truck syndrone and make an unwise decision, they say nothing grows out slower than a bad haircut. Well nothing sucks for longer than getting screwed by thousands on a vehicle deal. and yes i am speaking from experience.

Consider yourself luck, I got offered $6000 for my truck this afternoon. I couldn't believe it.

Oh well, guess i'll just keep the ol 12 valver.

I kind of work it different than most. I know before I go in exactly what I want for my trade-in, what I want to pay for the new truck. So I have a number I want to get to bottom-line. I tell them up front if they can do it I will sign and buy today. If not I will go someplace else and do. I also tell the sales guy if he is not able to complete the deal completely and not go to the manager or whatever I will leave and go someplace else because I don't want to play. Maybe my bottom line is to high it is my number but if I am happywith it so be it. By the way do a lot of homework before picking the bottom line number; I mean a lot!!!!

Last year I turned down a $25,000 offer for my truck. I still wouldn't even consider it today. I just got too much $$ in it and I like the truck too much.

Bob has a good comment

Bob C. makes a very good point which I learned while I was in purchasing as a computer buyer and the lesson learned was to never deal with someone who does not have signature authority for the deal - How many times have to talked to a sales person that has to run off to his/her manager to approve the sale?

BTW - I was offered $450 in trade for my 68 Mustang that later was sold for $3,000. If you don't like the price then go somewhere else or sell it yourself but don't get mad about it just because they want to make more money then others.

Half the reason I bought a new truck instead of used was the amount of trade in they gave me. I had a 95 ford F-250 with a 460, 4x4, and most options with 130,000 miles. I figured I could sell it around here for around 8000, they gave me 11,500 and came well off sticker plus throw the rebate in and I couldn't pass it up. Whoops, almost forgot I actually traded in another car, 96 Plymouth breeze with 80,000 miles I thought was worth 4500, guess what they gave 4500 for it. I was really amazed that they would even take two trades on one vehicle, let alone still deal.
