I used a triangular wooden block and a gate hinge to mount the control panel of an IC-706 in the center console.

Just open the lid, swing out the control panel & close the lid.

It's very quick, convenient to operate & easily placed out of sight before leaving the truck.

Mounted my 706 is same place. I used a 1/8 alum. plate with velcro and when the lid is down it sandwiches it to the velcro and if I want to remove just lift.

That little unit is on special this month at AES. $759, includes the remote unit... .....

Little poke for Matt. :p

My one and only rig is an Icom IC-W32A. It takes a LOT of restraint to not go out and heatup the credit card on radio goodies...

Thanks Nick. :)

That's awesome. Ham is more powerful than CB, right? Can you guys get the CB freqs? Always was interested in Ham mobile but I know NOTHING about it, thanks.

Bryan,

Hams can legally transmit with more than 5 watts, but I've talked to other hams all over the world with not much more power than that. Most of the mobile ham radios are adjustable from a few watts to about 100.

One night I talked directly to an astronaut on board the International Space Station as it passed over Atlanta. Most of the astronauts are hams.

Although these radios can receive CB frequencies and can be easily modified to transmit on them, it's technically not legal to do so because the radio hasn't been approved by the FCC as a CB transmitter. Listening is OK.

Driving cross country, I use CB to talk to the big rig drivers, they know where the best fuel prices are!

Best regards,

Drew

I've got 3 s units of noise on 40 meters when ignition key is turned on. Hissing or rushing sound. Not speed related. Doesn't matter if engine is actually running or not. Not present on 75M but slightly apparent on 20M but no higher in freq. Any ideas??

That's a real nice setup!

I especially like the security aspect and ease of swinging it out of sight.

I have my 706 faceplate mounted more at eye level, and within easy reach of the steering wheel - I have a field-strength meter sitting behind it, and the main box is under the console, and an Ameritron 600 watt linear amp sits under the passenger seat.

Ham radio installations

One of these days I'll get around to installing my Yaesu FT857 (Yaesu's version of the ICOM 706) in my Ram. I really like the hide-away controlhead that AF4X has! But I have a Geno's Cup Smoothie so that won't work. Hmmm.

My Kenwood TMD700 is mounted to the ashtray door. The Garmin GPS parses LAT/LONG data to the Kenwood which sends out my postion, course and speed via APRS on the internet.
