Truck has sporatic Hard start problem. Usually starts right up if it only sits for an hour or less, anymore than that and she cranks over for 3 seconds or so before firing. Kinda like starting on a real cold day without plugging in. Seems to run fine, can't find any obvious leaks so... ... before shelling out for a Hot Rod VP (can't replace any item with stock, that is my rule!;) ) I am thinkin of trying Mach 1. 5's hoping that in doing so I might find/repair a leak on the High pressure side of the VP. Good idea or bad idea??

When I hit the key pressure gauge goes to 7 or 8 psi before falling back to zero for start. Used to hit the key and watch the gauge zoom to 13 or even 15 before falling back for start. Does this sound like a leak? Could the leak be inside the VP?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks:confused:

Side note, I am thinkin 1. 5's cause I don't want to change turbo now and I figure I can unplug Raptor and drive easy and keep the Auto smilin for another year. I rarely tow and wonder if I will be sorry I did not go with Mach 2's. I want to be able to drive without worrying about EGT's unless towing heavy loads. Yeah I lend my truck out on occassion.

Sounds like you need to see if you have any codes stored. My truck would do the same thing, and the VP44 was toast. However, you may have a problem in the primary fuel system. i. e. , a leak somewhere that is allowing the transfer pump to suck air.

Get the truck scanned for codes. Try Autozone for a free scan.

I know the key-on, key-off procedure works on my '02. Not sure if it will work on your '99 or not. The procedure is key-on, key-off, key-on, key-off, key-on, key-off. (3 cycles) They must be completed in a certain amount of time (like 3 or 4 seconds). Codes will then be displayed in the digital odometer display. It will go something like: "P - ECU" "P1693" "P done" "P-PCU" "P0234" "P0216" "P done" and then return to the mileage display. Any codes listed above are just examples. You can find a list of the codes in the 24 valve FAQ section of the message board. Hope this helps!

It does help

Checking the codes was something I overlooked. Guess I was under the impression that a code would set the "Check Engine" light... ... . but maybe not.

Thanks

Not all codes set off the "Check Engine" light. The on/off key method will not display the codes on a '99. I should know... ... I have one and had to buy a scanner:rolleyes:

Thanks

Yeah I just went out and tried it. I was hopin the key deal would display the winning Mega millions numbers for tonight:D I think I am gonna need them after I find out what's really wrong:eek:

How much fuel pressure do you have when you try to start? Anything over about 7psi while cranking can cause a hard start problem. The factory arrangement runs the pump for just a moment and shuts it off. You start with zero pressure showing on the gage, but it comes up to 12-15 as soon as you release the key. Too much pressure at start... been there done that.

No different than the factory arrangement as far as that goes. I don't think that is the problem even though fuel pressure is not the same every time I start like it used to be. This morning it was about 6 psi at start up, I'll keep an eye on that though.

One more thing. I notice some times after a hard start fuel pressure sits at 10 psi for a couple of seconds before climbing to 16 psi where it stays until I shut it off. Anyone know how the VP is supposed to keep its prime. Is there a check valve that could be bleeding down or something? I have tried parking on hills facing different directions but no change. Will start right up if I let it sit for less than an hour. The longer it sits the longer it cranks before starting. I am going to replace the fuel filter and seperator just for fun, but I can't imagine that is my problem.

Thanks for all the input. Keep the suggestions coming:confused:

Code reader

Anyone know where to plug the scanner in. I am going to Autozone at lunch and it would be easier if I knew where it plugged in at.

Thanks

check fuel lines sound like u may be drawing air in after a short time...

I agree but how do I check them. They appear to be ok. Maybe just give em a little turn. Check em with soap bubbles maybe. Diesel is so damn hard to keep from leaking how could I have no diesel leak but be leaking air????

Thanks
