Hauling Question

I’m planning on loading an auto trailer with 3 loads of wood pellets fuel, which will add up to be 6,000 lbs. I would like to put another load in the back of the truck, 2,000 lbs. Is this too much of a load?



I could also disperse the load to 7,600 lbs on the trailer and 400lbs in the back of the truck. Would that option be better?



I also have a 200 lbs. camper shell that I would leave on the truck.

If you have a tandem axle trailer that is rated for 8-10K I wouldn't have a problem with your load on my 3500's... we do have air bags and have altered the spring hangers...

If you have a single axle trailer, your really looking for problems... also if you have an aftermarket hitch, even if its dealer installed as a trailer tow, (read not factory installed) it might not be rated for your loads...

Any idea what the trailer weighs empty? The 7,600 lb trailer rating includes the empty trailer weight plus the load, so if the trailer were to weigh 1,600 lbs empty and you add 6,000 lbs you would be at your legal trailer max weight.

Speaking for myself, I'd air the rear truck tires to max and put the 6k on the trailer and 2k in the truck. The shell will just make it a little harder loading and unloading. The total load is about the same as the D-Max at the end of a tow rope (couldn't resist).

You won't have any issues with what you are trying to accomplish. Except, maybe all the darned construction work. You're probably used to it by now though being in Soda Springs.

Mberry, you are right about the road work, plenty of it. I'm picking up the pellets in Reno and get to deal with the narrow lanes and traffic backup on I80.

The total load is about the same as the D-Max at the end of a tow rope (couldn't resist).

I wouldn't be opposed to doing that, but as mentioned above I'd double check the trailer rating. Some car trailers are 6000 gross and weigh 1500-2000 empty.



Also, as car trailers are not enclosed, consider how you'll tie down the 2000 lb pallets they come on. You'll need some really heavy duty ratchet straps. Remember, the idea is to secure it in such a way that, theoretically if the trailer were to tip over, the load won't come off. In reality, I know the straps might break, etc. just don't use tiny little motorcycle straps.
