Competition New Year's Day Drags

What were the circumstances when the output shaft broke on your 47RE? For instance were you racing? Were you shifting with the torque converter locked? What HP were you at? Running NOS?

I was wondering when I needed to start worrying about mine. I've got the money for an input shaft, but not for it and the output shaft, and injectors, and twins, and, and, and.

Thanks

I broke the output shaft 2 times last year. I have a 99 s/b q/c 4x4. The first time I broke the shaft I did not have a lock up controller with a switch just used too much boost at the line @ 30lbs and it let go while waiting for the last light on the tree. The second time I broke the shaft I had up graded to Don M EDM 3's with a hx40 and a drag comp on 5x5. It was in lock up from the line and let go with the 1 to 2 shift. Thats my sad tale of woe I hope you and others can learn from I costly mistakes. I now have a fully loaded suncoast with shafts & flex plate as well. I did not use the controller this past week end it has to be set up so that the truck gets past the 1 to 2 shift point before it locks up then I will be OK. I been told to keep switch off until after the 1 to 2 shift then flip the switch. My switch needs to be relocated so I have easy access to it so I can do that.

I spun the hub splines on my imput shaft at a 1-2 shift in Lancaster during the Truckin for Kids event. I then had a hardened hub and shaft installed, along with a few other goodies.

1 output shaft to date.

I had the cryoed shaft swapped in when I went with a tighter torque converter. I had launched on the stock shaft many times, and even the cryoed shaft lasted pretty well... ..... as long as I kept it under 20psi on the launch. When mine broke, I was in 4wd building boost, and it let go around 24psi or 25psi. Got a lil excited about the Supra I was going to race. Powerlevel would have been upper 400's to lower 500's.

Now I have a billet shaft from Opie and only got to the track one time before they closed for winter. I'm happy with mine.

I sheared the teeth off the stock hub:p

Why were you told not too lock up in the 1 to 2 shift? Isn't that the reason for buying billet shafts so you can shift locked up?

Bob I was told by both DTT & Suncoast that the 1 to 2 shift should not be in lockup. The shafts give you a chance to use more boost at launch. I now leave the line with @ 35 lbs of boost. that makes a big difference in your 60' time I am down around 1. 77 to 1. 69 sec's now from 1. 9. to 1. 85 at 20lbs of boost.

h:eek: ly crap 35lb launch must be the ultimate slingshot ride. how do you hold back that much pressure?

do you run a line lock?

I broke 2 output shafts and one intermediate shaft. I tried 35PSI launches,in my truck it just ignites all 4 tires. It is too much,It may be my 4. 10s too, since i have more mechanical advantage than the 3. 55 trucks on the launch.

Just the one time...

Mine went right at launch, below 15lbs boost, maybe 400 or so hp back then. Heard it snap then truck just went limp...

I've put a lot of 1/4 miles on my billet shaft, and so far, so good. Ujoints are original and perfect.

My highest boost for launching is 20lbs as I spin 'em if I ever go higher; guess I need much stickier tires! My current 60' times are high 1. 6's to low 1. 7's, if I could hook up at 35lbs boost, maybe they'd drop to 1. 4's or 1. 5's, eh? ;)

If you're launching with boost and have some hp, that output's on borrowed time. But I understand the input shaft is more critical; when the output goes, it doesn't take a bunch of stuff with it... :)

I still have the factory output shaft, and leave with around 20lbs of boost and get consistant 1. 6 60ft times. No problems with the shaft yet, however I have broken alot of other stuff. I can't imagine leaving with 30 plus lbs of boost, my brakes barely hold when I try to make 20.

i broke a input shaft with a little touch and go at a toll booth not really on it. ripped the splines right out of the hub. after i installed a steel one from dtt. started doing 4 wheel hi launches. it was not long before i smoked the out put. after i put in a new cam started to adjust the waist gate on the turbo. i loaded it up and that one broke in the drive way. as they say parts is parts thats why they make more. by that time the steel out put shafts were out and have not had any problems that. do it right the first time the eng will only brake the weakest link. they offer all updated parts for a reason. so put them all in at one time and save the labor cost. i did not have that choice. now the truck only dynoed 401 at rear wheels so it show you how a little power and a lot of abuse will do to stock parts.

Evil Otto,

What year is your truck? You haven't entered a profile yet. I'm trying to see if the newer models might have better shafts than the older models.

i hate to tell you chrysler hates updating any thing. even if they know it is bad they will use up there old supply. they dont care about a fix. they will only fix the ones that fail. its all about the money to them.

i have been working on there crap for years and as they would come up with an updated fix for a problem. they would only use them for failure and 3 yrs later they are still using the same old seal instead of the new one that fix the problem. they use up there old supply first.

so i would think since they have no major problem with the shafts in the 47re the are proably the same from 94-2002. some are strong and some are not. one may break at 15psi another may break at 40psi.

Aftermarket Intermediate Shafts are nice if a guy is leaving the line at over 30lbs. of boost. At DTT we had to build intermediate shafts about 5 months ago for guys like Snow Man, Opie, Nathan, and Brandon who leave the line real hard.

smoop, make sure you check with vendor about the horsepower they rate the shafts at. 300M didn't hold up in some of the extreme trucks when we were testing materials.
