This evening, I finally tore into it. After finding a little oil in my radiator and overflow and not being able to explain the loss of coolant that I have been encountering, I decided it was time to change the head gasket. A recent oil analysis showed no water or glycol in my oil so all should be OK.

After a few hours, the head is sitting ready to be lifted off tomorrow by myself and a friend (6'4" ~260#).

Once off, It is going south to Portland for some valve work, all flow components are heading up to HDM48 for some porting and I'm gonna do some repair work on my VE. My throttle shaft is leaking so I'm gonna replace the bushing and seal, and I'm going to replace that o-ring that is so prone to leaking on the back side of the pump. Oh yeah, the 32oorpm GSK and 60# springs are oing in too.

Hopefully, I'll have this beast back together by next weekend. I wonder how bad my wifes Acura is gonna sit with that CTD head in the trunk? :eek:

Head is off and it is hard to imagine an engine with right at 250K miles and the hone marks are still very visible. If this were a gasser, I'd probably be boring cylinders, replacing pistons, bearings ... come to think of it, I'd probably just be getting a new truck.

Carl

Yup, they last a long time. Mine had the same marks visible, and had been run HARD the first 180K or so.

How much are you getting ported? I'm interested, sort of. I dont have the money now, but would like some numbers- mainly EGTs, boost, and the all-important MPGs, and if they go up or down.

How bad did the car squat? :D:-laf

Daniel

I'm having the exhaust manifold and exhaust housing, compressor housing and elbow off the turbo and the air inlet horn ported. HDM48 will be doing it for me. Everyone I know that hashad him do it has been very happy with the results.

Haven't put the head in the trunk of the car yet. That is gonna happen tomorrow morning. Actually, I don't think it is going to squat as much as I expected. I had heard the head was about 150-170# but it is no where near that. I'm guessing 100#, maybe.

We have the "Energizer" bus here..... keeps going, and going and..... >>>>>>>>>>>Well, in-fact it is used on routs to this day,,,,,,,,often times taking the place of many "newer" buses. Some of which are equipped with the VP44/ISB engines :{

Yep, we too have VP44 fuel system failures. My "Energizer" bus is VE equipped :D:D :D :D :D :p :p :p

I replaced the cyl head on this bus with 9,000 and some hours. Still has the hone marks,,,, and at well over 10,000 hours, she is still going strong;)
