Can anyone help identify where these parts came from? I pulled my trans on my '98 last weekend to replace the front pump seal. I was shocked to find these parts laying in the bottom of the pan! I can not locate where they came from, maybe somewhere on the top of the valve body. About 6 weeks ago I accidentally bumped the shifter into reverse at about 15 mph. Since then I have had no torque converter lockup. Could I have blown these parts out of the valve-body when I accidentally bumped reverse? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Guys.

Kevin,

That's the boost valve and its associated components which are supposed to be installed on the valve body.

The boost valve provides increased fluid "apply pressure" to the overdrive clutch during 3-4 upshifts, and when accelerating in fourth gear. It also serves to increase line pressure during torque converter lock-up.

That shiny U-shaped piece is the spring valve retainer which holds the boost valve (the plunger), a spring, and a plug into the valve body. The ears of the spring valve retainer slip into grooves in the valve body and the entire assembly is held in place from slipping out of the valve body by a cover plate.

Normally the ears on the spring valve retainer are bent at a 90 degree angle to the long ends, but since they're not now, it suggests the retainer was forced out of the valve body by some extreme pressure... probably by shifting into reverse at 15 mph.

THIS INFO SHEET from Sonnax shows the location of the spring valve retainer and cover plate on the valve body.

When you replace the valve spring retainer, be sure to inspect the grooves in the valve body carefully to make sure it wasn't damaged... you wouldn't want a new valve spring retainer to easily pop out due to a damaged valve body.

Good luck,

John, thank you so much! I just ordered a new style retainer that replaced the top cover plate. I will have to look in my shop manual to see if I can find a schematic to make sure I have all the little parts and in what order they go back in. Again, thank you so much!! This is the reason I love being a TDR member!
