Well... at 264,000+ the Getrag 5 speed in my '93 4x2 D-250 is quickly heading south. Maybe already there!
I headed out for Myrtle Beach SC Friday morning to do repair/maintenance on my bro-in-law's trailer. Wouldn't you know I had ALL of the supplies/tools in my truck. Had trouble shifting into 4th & 5th but it finally got into gear with gentle coaxing. THEN I could get back to 3rd, but not 2nd. More coaxing. Then had 2nd & 4th, but not 5th. Went on this way until I got to the beach. Had the same problems coming back, but I left early Sunday morning with light traffic, so once I was going in 5th, I had very little shifting to do until I got back to Raleigh. Went straight to Lowes to return some sheathing, and the shifter came up out of the transmission about 1-2 inches. I pushed it back down and pounded it in with my fist, and came home. In 4th.
On the bright side, I did average 25. 6 MPG on the round trip!
I can find nobody in my area that works on/rebuilds manuals. I did find rebuilt units at Standard Transmission in Texas. Anybody have experience with them? Or know of a closer source to Raleigh, NC for a new (LOL) or rebuilt Getrag? I have no shop to work in, so I'll have to farm out the install if I can get someone to do it after I supply the transmission.
