High idle switch not working on my 2017 Cummins Aisin 3500. Manual indicates that the dealership needs to enable it. What's involved and what's the cost?

Shouldn't be more than 30 min to an hour charge. They just have to hook up a computer and enable it. Pretty easy if it has not changed either the newer trucks.

From what I've heard they don't have to do that. It has to be requested. It just depends on the dealership tho. In cold climates they will enable it but in warm they won't unless you request it

My 16 was enabled upon delivery in Phoenix where its not cold. I have read many posts of dealers enabling it for free. I also have been told in 13 and 14 it had to be turned on but since 15 it is supposed to be enabled on all trucks leaving the factory.

Good to know

If you're near your selling dealer, tell them that most dealers enable it when making the sale. Ask them to do the same for no charge. If they know you are on a truck forum/blog, they will not want it advertised that they did less than other dealers. If you want, pull up the site and show them that dealers are doing it compmementary at point of sale. If not near selling dealership, see if they can arrange it to be done near where you live.

For quite some time now ctds have shipped with high idle enabled. It is not a feature that is supposed to be decided on by the dealer.Neither the tech or dealer will get paid by FCA to change settings on a customers truck. If you are having other scan tool work performed no biggie.

My 2013 diesel supplement describes the idle-up feature. Doesn't say anything about the dealer needing to activate it.

I'd present it to the dealer in this way, "Gee, my high idol feature doesn't seem to work.", then let them tell you your options.*

Mine was also enabled from the start and I never asked about it. I drove my truck home about 3 hours after it was shipped to the dealer. I think it had to have been enabled from the factory.

jhenderson - Sorry but I missed your post for some reason. I followed the instructions on page 238 - in park, parking brake on then I used the speed control switches as directed. The manual also states 'This featuremust be enabled by your dealer. See your local dealer."

The engine will automatically idle up to 1000 rpm when conditions arise. Otherwise if you want manual high idle, it's gotta be enabled by the dealer with wiitech.

Mine can enabled. It works *without the parking brake being used. Terra, are you absolutely sure you didn't touch the brake pedal before, during, or after initiating the high idle. That's how it's tuned off when no longer desired.*

Jhendersen - good catch - no I am not sure that I did not depress the break pedal at some point. For all I know. I may have even had my foot on the break pedal the whole time. Again good catch never dawned on me that may be the problem. Will retry within the next few days and repost,

My 2015 also works without the parking brake applied.

Don't forget that you can also turn on the exhaust brake during high idle. This warms up the engine much faster - warm air in about 5 minutes at 30 degrees ambient. It's the only time I have ever heard the turbo working.
