Two of the features that that I miss most on my 06 CDT are the lack of Daylight Running (DRL) lights and Automatic headlight control. This post addresses the former. I am in the process of designing an Automatic headlight controller as a follow on project.

The first step was to pay a visit to my dealer to find out why DLR has not been implemented in vehicles shipped to the US while it is implemented in vehicles shipped to Canada. Surprisingly enough my dealer told me that the DLR in my truck could be activated by a simple ECM program change. Cost estimate $100. Not a very attractive price for a simple program change that in my opinion should have been implemented by the factory in the first place.

As part of my research to see what was involved in designing a direct DLR activation circuit I came across a item in Geno's catalog advertising a set of adapter cables that allow the installation of 2005 (65Watt) fog lamps in place of the stock 2006 (55 watt) bulbs. The cables are 20 bucks and certainly worth the cost unless you are a diehard DIY fanatic like myself. The two lamps utilize different keyways thus are not directly interchangeable. The 2006 lamps also have a sightly smaller O ring seal. When I examined the lamps and the cable connector I decided that it would be a simple mod to increase the width of the connector keyway which would allow either bulb to be inserted. Thirty seconds with a mini grinder on each connector and the 2005 bulbs plugged right in. I keep the 2006 bulbs as spares. As for the O rings I simply replaced the rings that came with the 2005 bulbs with slightly larger ones. All in all a 15 minute job. Is there a difference in brightness? YOU BET.

Next, the DLR hookup which was my primary goal. This proved to be almost as simple as upgrading the fog light bulbs. I chose to activate DLR via the fog lamps, which is what the factory DLR use.

Activating DLR using the fog lamps involved the installation of a heavy duty 12VDC relay ($5 at the local parts store). The relay provides direct 12 power to the fog lamps via a 15amp fuse ($3). The relay is activate by tapping into an accessory circuit with an "add a fuse" tap ($9). Total cost $20 which includes all the components above plus a few odds and ends.

Using this circuit, the fog lamps remain on any time the engine is running. In addition to the safety aspect which was my primary goal, the lights stay on with both the headlight low and high beams. On secondary country roads visibility during night time driving is significantly improved.

Fog lights are aimed at the area below the low beams. Keep in mind that the fog lamps are used for DLR in all Canadian vehicles. Further, the fog lights, in normal operation, can be used ONLYwith low beams. If glare was an issue then the foggers would be designed not be used with low beams. Why the factory allows fog lamps to be used with low beams and not high beams escapes me.

This may be true for some vehicles but is NOT for Dodge pick-ups. They use the high beam portion of the bulbs at 40% power. BTW so does our mini-van.

It might be against the law to run high beams and fog lights... there are rules and regulations regarding this and I know they will pull you over and fine you in Pennsylvania.

Just FYI.

I think I might have the DLR lamp enabled in my truck... I travel a lot and there are some really dumb people around here... I need all the help I can get...

I just wish the fog users would use them "in the fog" where the fog diffuses the added light or when there is no oncoming traffic.

My dealer turns on the DRL on my purchases for free... as part of the sale... . I showed them how to do it... . they currenty charge other customers 45 for this service... .

The stock fog lights are VERY bright coming head on at night. You should not be using these things at night, with head on traffic.

BTW, DRL are required by Canadian law.

DRL are required by Canadian law.

yep. . and they are great. so many idoits up here don't know how to turn on their lights in poor weather [rain, snow, fog... ] so at least you have something to see when they are driving at you [although most of the rice up here have neon blue lights for their DRL's ]

Geno's also offers a harness which allows the foglights to remain on with the highbeams. I purchased this as well as the kit you described above and have some really good headlights now. I travel a lot miles in the Texas Hill Country at night and need all the help I can get to stop our four legged friends that easily find their way into the brush guard

Hmmmmmm, some intersting posts... I did a bit more research on the use of fog lamps and noted that most of the regulations concering their use are very limited. What most of the "regulations" address are the actual design requirements of how each type lamp, especially low beams, must compy with. The one issue that caught my attention was "dazzle". Use of fog lamps or other supplemental lighthing can cause a dazzle effect for on coming traffic. Thus they need to be properly aimed.

Since I have installed high intensity fog lamps dazzle could present an issue. However, I have yet to have any on comming vehicle give me the Hi Beam blink to indicate my lights were distracting. With that said I will probably add circuitry to either dim the lamps when they are being used as DLRs as well as circuitry to have them estinguished when the low beam headlights are turned on. Manual override will be included to allow operation at full brightness on demand with both low and high beams. Activating all three (fog, low, high) simutaniously will be especially usefull while driving on National forest roads.
