Last night I was trying to retreive the number of hours on my 06, I held the Trip button while turning on the key, all kind of light came on in the guage panel, guages started moving and the odometer starting flashing codes and with each change of codes, the guages reset to another point. Didn't have a pen handy to right them down, but does anyone know what the display sequence means that are displayed??

Thanks in advance.

i know there is a way to test all the guages and dash lights, maybe thats what you did. It lets you look to see if any of the bulbs are blown out, i think.

That is the sequence to iniate the Cluster Diagnostics. I have posted the Cluster Diagnostic codes a few times, you might find them by searching.

I don't have them on this computer.

The display is a xx nn, and will finish with 00 00, where xx is the code and nn is the number of times key is sequenced since the code I think.

Here is a list I found on line.

So then, how DO we retrieve hours? Thanks. Great info.

Engine hour retrieval on my '03. Not sure if it is the same on the later models.

With the engine shut off, turn the ignition to the run position. From the odometer reading (not trip meter), push and hold the button. The trip meter will show and about 5 seconds after that the hours will show. If you try this while the trip meter is showing, it will just reset the trip meter.

Don't know about lifespan in hours, but I just checked my truck and it has 36366 miles with 1001 hours. 36. 33mph average. Turbo1Ton, thanks for the tip.

If I take my average mph and apply it to 350,000 miles it comes to 9,634 hours. I think 350,000 is the Cummins stated service life, or something like that.

I have 280,000km (174,000 miles) and 3400hrs (can't remember exaclty)

My sons 97 12V has 800,000km (500,000 miles)..... dosen't run much different now than when new and does not yet use oil.

I haven't checked my 2001 in quite a while, BUT IIRC 30 MPH is about average and 350K / 10,000 hours is about average design life, sounds like you are right on track.
