Since these forums are usually dominated by the problems we are having with our trucks, I thought I would be nice to pass along a success story. My signature lists all of the important information regarding my truck (except the add-on goodies which are too many to list).
On October 10, 2000, my truck will be two years old. Last weekend, I turned 96,000 miles. I am a salesman who drives quite a bit (obviously), so this is a different kind of "work truck. " Other than the few customers who have dubbed it "The School Bus," I am the envy of all who ride in it.
In 96,000 miles, I have done the following:
- Changed the oil 13 times (7,000 miles)
- Changed the fuel filter 6 times (14,000 miles)
- Changed the coolant and transmission fluid (50,000 miles)
- Bought one set of tires
Other than that (well, check the weep hole for blockage every 10 minutes- #ad
, NOTHING!
As I have posted on every mpg topic listed, I drive mostly highway at 68 mph (which is still speeding in NY & PA). That equates to 1800-1900 rpm. I am seeing 20-24 mpg at the pump, depending on the terrain & weather. Around 60,000 miles, I saw a serious difference in fuel economy, shifting smoothness, and engine noise. It was like that engine just settled in for the long haul.
So basically, I hope there are more success stories out there. I always think it is good to hear some positive feedback, especially from satisfied customers. I would not trade this truck for anything... . well... . a brand new 6 speed wouldn't be too bad.
Oh, yea - this is also the first pick-up I have ever owned. Looks like I chose wisely with DC.
Have a great day and keep the faith!

Thanks for the "good news" post! I'm happy enough with my current mpg, but looking forward to even better mileage as my "non-towing" rig breaks in. Just 42,500 more miles to go - less than a year! #ad

Oops - synthetic - may take me 120,000 to fully break it in. Oh well, just 2 more years to go, hope the body holds up #ad

My 98 was the same way. Just routine maintenance. I saw the guy that bought it a couple of months ago. He's pulling a 5th wheel with it and thinks it is the greatest. I like my 01. It's solid with no squeaks/rattles. Drives good (with the new Delphi box) and gets great mileage per gallon. I'll keep mine.

Well, I just got home from a road trip to L. A. and back. I took the truck to Glenn Thomas Dodge to have them fix a rear seal leak in the Gear Vendor overdrive, do a front end alignment, adjust the valves, etc. They said the brakes are only worn 50% (I have 61,000 miles). An exhaust brake definitely saves wear and tear on the brakes! I changed the fuel filter while visiting my folks, and put a little air in the tires. My fuel mileage driving there was 22. 9, coming home I got 25! No complaints here!

I'll add to that... .

76k miles, one set of tires, oil/filters.

Brakes are still original and the other day when it was real hot I returned to find my rearview mirror hanging from the power connection for the self-dimmer. Mileage has always been between 16 & 18 empty unless I am really playing hard.

Can't complain.....

Great Truck! It pulls way better than my F350 ever did. I'm getting over 20mpg at 80mph empty. Only problem so far 1 bad speaker.

Tim:

Good post!

My 96' will be five years old soon.
I just turned over 106,000 miles.
I regularly tow a racing trailer
through the mountains to races my
son and I go to and locally I tow
a MF tractor on a 20 ft. flatbed
gross weight; 10,000 plus!

I have had very good luck with this
truck and plan to keep it for
a long time. Just upgraded the
power substantially with 370 inj's.
and major pump modifications!
