How can you tell what codes got set off

I see people saying i set off code p123456 or p456789

How can I tell what codes were set off? Is there some kind of machine at the dealer that has to be hooked to up the ecu or can I tell on my own?

with motor off turn your key off-on three times, leave key in on position the third time ... read the codes on your odometer



to get hours ... with motor off ... turn key to on and hold trip reset button down for 6 seconds ... hold it down from mileage not trip or you will just reset the trip

So when I picked up the truck yesterday, I was trying to show the salesman that you can read engine hours. I wasn't sure how to do it, so I tried hold the odometer button in as I turned the key on. The instrument cluster went through some kind of extensive self test with lights flasing, needles dancing, etc. The salesman said I just reset the computer. I assume that it's just a self test. Anyone know for sure?

I know for sure that most salesmen are idiots and know very little about their product. It was an instrument cluster diagnostic procedure and nothing more.



I think if I ran a dealership I would make TDR required reading for my salesforce. Also for my service team so they'd know the telltale signs of bombs.
