Cattletrkr: You've received a ton of data from this blog, how 'bout showing us a graph/chart of the results? its a lot of 'replies' to go thru.

But without an oscilloscope I'm not sure it's possible to diagnose a piezo injector.

Not piezo, just standard coil type injector.

Over 200k on both my sons truck and mine. His were in bad shape and needed replaced. Mine were still functioning correctly with no problems at 205k, just noisy and lots of injector rattle, after using an additive package and better filters for most of the miles.

Pretty much all the additives designed for diesel fuel are safe for the DPF, they may even aid in keeping the DPF cleaner.

Things like 2SO, ATF, heavy oils, etc, you are taking a big chance with in a DPF emissions system.

Haven't been on here in a while...been driving...Lol Lost an injector at 160K melted a piston...:( Rebuilt the motor. New injectors, Fass 150 now I average 300K for injectors then I just get nervous and replace them. Truck is the 06 in my unupdated sig I'm at 893K now. I use Howell's in the winter about every other tank unless its below freezing then every tank.

I did post this question in another thread I started, but using Seafoam, as in pouring strait Seafoam into the filter canister when changing the filter, will it damage my pump or injectors? Here is a video in the application I'm referring to.

What are the symptoms of bad injector? I have some smoke under hard acceleration but I have my Smarty Jr turned up on Towing/ Torque.....216,000 on stock...don't injectors make knocking sound when going?

I use it and have used it on a multiple sets of injectors since about 50k, have over 280k now. I have seen no damage on any fuel system parts whatsoever. I also over does a full tank of fuel with 2SO and Power Service when doing the cleaning to offset any loss of lubricity. The SeaFoam is pretty harsh cleaner but that is what it takes to clear the crap that cooks out of the ULSD. It is not running in the fuel system very long as it is a cleaner that needs to sit a while to work, the extra lube cannot hurt at any point.

Go back to stock and check for have under a hard throttle and load. Stock tuning there should be none once the exhaust system has been blown out. If you get a grey haze with hard acceleration the injectors are worn. The additional power and timing will cause more haze than normal with the box tunes so it can obfuscate problems. Most injector failures are subtle to start with, extra white smoke on a cold start, haze under hard throttle, long crank, dropping mileage, engine roughness. By the time you hear a knock or miss things are REALLY bad and the subtle signs have been missed for a while.

This seems like a contradiction to me. How can you have had multiple sets of injectors in 300K miles and say that there has been no damage on your fuel system parts? What am I missing? I'm about to roll 310K on my original injectors and have not noticed any degradation of performance. 98% Power Service over the lifetime of the truck, and 2% Howe's early on, mostly on long distance driving.

I am going to guess that Cerb was replacing/trying out different injectors sets for reasons OTHER then damage or failure.

In other words, the biggest reason perhaps would be changing injectors to complement other modifications in the search for performance gains.

Just a guess...LOL

Yep, that is exactly what I was\am doing. The OE injectors were still performing the same at 200k as they were at 20k, just tired of the injection rattle and the noisy operation. Aside form tuning, injectors are the easiest things to change looking for an impact.

Dick,
I married a girl from Howard Lake who was in your class. (Diane Swanson).
She was trying to reach you for a class reunion.
PM me if you want further info.

Before I sold my 04.5 it had 385,000 on the original injectors with stock filtration using a 5 micron Baldwin filter. The new owner is following my lead and the truck now has over 400,000 miles on the original injectors.

I had #6 go bad and replaced at about 75,000. Have used Howes diesel treat since, and have had no real issues since, and now have 245,000 and counting on the clock.

barbwire was my dad, and since his passing in 2008, his 2004 is still on the road with well over 400,000 miles on it. This has made me very happy seeing his old posts still on here after all these years! It's almost like talking to him again. I hope all you who were friends with him, are still doing well and are still driving dodge!

Replaced mine at about 120K. #5 coil went bad. Went ahead and did them all. Probably could have don't just the one but did the set. Wife's Liberty has Bosch injectors and it has 190,000 now and runs great.

My buddy Chris has 450K on his 03 3500's injectors. He had a Bullydog at one time and now a Smarty. He had to replace the CP3, but can't get him to replace injectors. He says it just runs too good, and I agree with him that it does run sweet. and swift

2004 305/555 nv5600 Almost 25600! Injectors were replaced at 77k. Runs great and nv5600 is still very smooth. Hours as of this post 7774. Hoping for 350,000 then do what it take to make the engine and transmission new again. Planning for injectors in 30,000mi.
