I frickin hate thieves. Came out of work tonight and this is what I saw:

This happened right outside the hospital in broad daylight. I hate to turn it into insurance because I don't want my rates to go up because of some dopehead. Where is the best place to get replacements, and how hard is it to re-install them?

Thanks for letting me vent.

Their 450 or so a pop from dealer. You can get them on ebay for like 180 I think. I busted one off on a telephone and got an ebay one. No quite as nice but still a mirror. Heater and motor works.

Thanks Dave. What did you search for on ebay? I have never been there before now, and have been searching for an hour. I can find complete mirror assemblies, but not just the glass.

Can you just buy the glass portion? I have the Cipa replacement towing mirrors from Geno's and I found one of them cracked. I ordered the glass replacement from Geno's. I believe it was a bit more then $ 20. 00.
So, maybe it's possible that you can order just that. I might be wrong. Maybe someone with more info on that can chime in.

Wow, didn't even know you could yank the mirror off like that without rendering it useless on another truck. Have you checked with Dodge for just the mirror part? What about the bucket... did they break anything on that?

It looks like a very clean, professional job. I didn't know they came apart like that either. Whoever did that knew exactly what they were doing. Everything appears to still work. When I play with the directional switches, the little stubs move as if the mirror was still attached. I have not noticed anything that appears broken. Just gone.

I filed a report with our wonderful security dept. and city PD. Lots of good that will do though.

Haven't had a chance to call Dodge yet. Don't know if that will do any good unless they can ship to me because the nearest dealer is 2+ hours away. Obviously, I can't drive the truck (legally) to go get mirrors. Man, I didn't realize how much I relied on mirrors until they aren't there anymore.

Thanks for the links guys. I will check them out now. Might as well. Too mad to go to sleep.

It's terrible. What kind of people do this? I hope you can get just the missing portion and make it work. Someone had hit my passenger Cipa mirror and it's cracked in half. It was parked on the street, residential area, noon time. L. A. is not a nice place.

If it's like the 2nd gen the glass panel clips on. If you're replacing the entire unit, an OEM pair (it's a kit) is cheaper than a single side. I think that insurance companies DEMAND single mirror replacements so most dealer split a kit and charge the insurance company full price.

I would try an automotive glass shop. I broke the glass in the towing mirror in the previously owned '00 3500 and had it replaced by Binswanger Glass for about $25. They had the replacement glass in stock and installed in about 30 minutes. However, it wasn't heated or power adjust. The heating element may make the replacement cost more.

I broke the glass in a towing mirror in my previous '01 several years ago. A local glass shop replaced it for a surprisingly low price. The glass was attached by a good grade of automotive adhesive and no big deal for the glass shop to repair.

If the dangling wires indicate your mirrors are heated as Bill addressed above you may have to buy heating elements that attach to the back or even glass with imbedded heating elements. I don't know how they are manufactured. I haven't seen the inside of the mirrors (yet?) on either of the trucks I've owned with heated mirrors.

Rad,

It could have been worse... . at least they took the time to disconnect the wires properly - most thieves would just cut the wires and leave you with a bigger mess. One of my mirrors wasn't adjusting properly and I pulled the entire mirror out and re-installed it. It is pretty easy to do. You'll notice some tabs in the center of the "circle" in their mirror housing... . that's where the mirror snaps in to. Good luck with the replacements. I have also seen some on craigslist for as little as $100 for a set of entire mirrors! You may find them at an auto dismantler.

Rad. I had to replace the entire unit on the left side. That is the price I told you. Instill you have to remove 3 bolts I think. One is on the inside of truck the other two are between door paneling and inside of door. Then disconnect to power. Thats it. 45 min

Thanks guys. I should be able to get a copy of the police report in a couple days. We'll see what happens after that.

From what Scooby says, it doesn't sound that hard to replace if I can find parts. According to Dave, even replacing the whole housing isn't that bad.

Rad,

Don't replace the whole mirror. You can get direct dot certified oem replacements from Burco at this link- Burco | Online Catalog

I had one break last year and new one already had the heating elements installed on them and looked exactly like the factory one that came on it. MUCH cheaper too!! Check em out you can't go wrong

What about going to a salvage yard, they all have internet connections to each other. So one place should be able to do a search and find something for you.

Who knows, you could be buying your own back again -NOT REALLY FUNNY!

Rad, and others for that matter. I hate seeing this, something happens to our trucks and after years and years of paying for insurance, we don't want to file a claim. My incident happened when my tailgate was stolen by the fine, diverse, folks in Oakland. I was very upset and didn't want to even deal with the insurance company. I did have comprehensive though and to prove a point to myself i ended up filing a claim. I was actually suprised to find out that it didn't raise my rate at all, and the insurance company cut me a check for $1600 in just days. All i'm saying is, what's the point of paying into something like that, and not wanting to use it when you need it. I'd at least give 'em a call and see what your options are.

Thanks guys. I found out today that I have to replace everything from the door out. There is some sort of mechanical connector missing that cannot be ordered. I am getting estimates and will present them to the hospital for payment. Since I was parked in a designated secure employee lot, I feel they are responsible. According to some employees, it has worked for them in the past. Figure it is worth a shot before I bug the insurance people.
