My friend bought a 2000 3500 4x4 black sport dually a while back. It is a 5-speed. He pulls horse trailers all the time with it (his parents own a trailer company here). He put the superchips programmer on it, 4" exhaust, and an air filter. One night I saw him and told him I wanted to ride in his truck with the chip. I asked him if the dually would smoke the tires (235-85-16's with 3. 55's). he said "yeah, sometimes. " Heres how:

Pull up to the light, put your very tip toes on the clutch pedal. Push the gas all the way to the floor. It doesnt matter how long that is. when the light goes green, simply slide your foot off the pedal! :-laf (watch out though, if the pedal gets your shin, I'd imagine it would hurt! ).

You no longer need the clutch, just pull it straight into second. then bang it into third, clutchless again. (A not so wise friend once told me "if you cant find it, grind it. They'll make a new gear next year").

We did this over and over. probably 6 or 7 lights in a row. He said he's gone through 3 or 4 clutches in like 20K miles. The stupid truck has like 80K on it now, and the trans is still good. I assume he uses stock clutches (he didnt know  ).

I guess the NV4500 is a pretty good trans after all. :-laf

Oo. Oo. Oh Oh is it for sale I want THAT ONE!!!  "Nope never beat on" LOL!! ;)

Thats gotta say something for that NV4500? I am suprised you guys were'nt picking up the pieces of the input shaft that should have exploded, side steppin the clutch like that.

I'm with NBowlin, that transmission is on borrowed time for sure. Tell your friend to start saving his money.

I've seen some 1¼" input shafts take some nasty abuse, eh Craig?

As for my NV-4500, I can't complain... it's been good. Then again - I don't beat it. Heck, I haven't even started that truck since before Christmas! :-laf

funny thing is, he just traded it in. Boy, the lucky new owners. :-laf

I'll bet one day it will be described as a "Sunday Driver"

of course it will! it was driven on sundays after all... . :-laf

This is how to destory a NV4500. I never should have touched the valet, the guy almost underneath me needed a little smoke. Opps. I am missing just about all the teeth on both fifth gears now.

Was it more of a "BOOM" or just a grinding????? :-laf

Sorry.

One pretty good boom, and then constant grinding and banging till I slowed her down. Then it would bang in all gears. Got her towed home. As soon as the boost got past 15 it went. I'm lucky it was only fifth gear, if it was 1,2,3,or 4 all the flying metal would have screwed me, I'm sure.
