How to identify axle/gearing?

Does anyone know the tag numbers or labelling system for the first gen axles? I was under there and nothing was obvious. Just numbers.

there should be a sticker under the hood near the radiator that will tell you the ratios.

There was a post on where the axle is stamped as to Dana 60, 70 or 80. There is a casting number on the front side of the rear axle in the web of the center that necks toward the tube. It is facing the rear on the front axle. I can't remember who did the post but there were pictures to help with finding that. If the truck in question is an 89 to 93, it is almost certainly a dana 70. Second gen could be 70 or 80 but most likely 80.



As to the ratio, there was a small tag about an inch long under one of the cover bolts which has the ratio stamped on it. It would be like 3. 07 or 3. 54 or 3. 93 or 4. 11. Sometimes, these have been removed and thrown away from carelessness by the previous owner. I bought a truck that had the axle tag in the ash tray. The numbers on the cover plate itself describe the type of gear. Check both front and rear as you surely have the same ratio on both.

Eddit: My 93 has a tag that is under two bolts on the cover so is longer. Same info as to ratio.

You probably have a 3. 54. My 93 showed a 3. 54 on the info tag but actually had a 4. 10 someone installed. You can check by making a chalk mark on the shaft and on the tire. Rotate the wheel one full turn while counting the revs on the drive shaft. Will be either about 3. 5 times or a little over 4 times.

thats the kind of answer I like... . with this thing, I'm not even sure where to start. There is no sticker and the tags are unreadable. THanks for the info.

If you can't read the tags. Then the next way is to do a oil change on the rear axle. Pull the cover off. The ratio will be marked on the ring gear along with the gearset part number. The ratio will be in this format XX-XX. Devide the smaller number into the bigger number and you will have the ratio.

or ya can go to a dlr,,,if ya know a decent one and have em run the vin in their computor and it'll print up all the stuff the rig was manufactured with. did this on my 89 w/ 727 and it shouldve came w/ 3. 07s which the computor printout showed but i did what stan recomended and apparently someone had replaced w/ 3. 54s
