No more excuses, Leaving the Bakken

Going on a Mt Goat hunt this year, not as a hunter but as a friend with good intentions to hold the pony's and make camp and take photos/videos, while he does the shooting. We will be above tree line for most of the trip. Needed some sturdy boots, and didn't need my regular hunting pacs (to warm) Have had these for awhile now getting them broke in, if you need a hunting boot that's going to last (I think) then take a look. These have caused no foot problems fit is like a glove.

This is the type of country that these boots were bought for, the hunter that drew the tag is a friend and has basically hit the lotto of hunting Mountain Goats here!! The trigger man in this video should have his A** kicked OFF!!! the mountain, 3 shots???? what kind of AH would do that?

Done a lot of hunting in high desert rim rock stuff. The boot in you pic is not the thing I would want. To heavy and to hot. (A lot of $$ for a boot.) Don't need Gortex don't need insulation for roughed high dry country. You biggest problem will be blisters. If you walk a hot day in that rocky stuff you will get them if you don't do thins right.

Don't believe I'd have posted that. The difference between me and him is I know I'm not good enough to take that shot. On a lighter note, I'm used to seeing $400 price tags on work boots, but they are custom fit from Wesco or Whites.

I don't believe that one pair of boots fits all needs, I have one thing in my favor is that I can only get blisters on ONE foot :-laf

If I have to worry about my Boots being to heavy then I shouldn't be out there. The key that I have found is to find the right sock combination. I wear a thin pair of nylon polyester to wick the moisture into my Wigwam wool socks, a change of socks during the day isn't a bad idea either. I like the leather for support and wear resistance turn an ankle 30 miles in and I might need a helicopter ride to get me out, then I have to worry about my Mules becoming bear feed. ;)

In a day it can go from HOT, RAIN, SNOW Pretty fast in MT high country!!

This guy did some hiking in some pretty NASTY stuff and the boots held up, But you cant believe advertisements either!!!

Brother BIG!
I agree on the heavier boots for ankle support!
The double socks with the wicking poly and wool is OUTSTANDING foot protection!
From the old days! "Keep yer feet dry, maggot"! Changing socks several times during the day was a necessity!
With cotton "hiking socks", its like walking with a wet dishrag wrapped around your feet!
Not a good idea!
I even wear wool socks as daily wear! Hate cotton socks, period!

Don't know if Schnee's makes those boots? If they are made by Meindl? Cabelas has them cheaper. I have tried the Cabelas version about 10 years ago and found that the lacing hardware was not reliably attached. Sent them back! I haven't owned a good set of Heavy hiker/climbing boots for a long time!
This is their newer version. I don't know what their quality would be!

The nylon polyester with wool is what I do also. Keeps the friction down. I have some damage to the leather on sharp rocks at times . Sometimes I use a pair of military desert boots. I find they are very comfortable. I would like to get a pair USMC RAT Hot boots from Danner. From what I have read in Marine Corp Times there the best thing since bread and butter for wear.

Actually these boot are an Italian Product, they are one of the two companies that are co-owned, one company makes Technical Mountaineering boots the other is more of this line or heavy backpacking types.

These boots are made for Schnees by Scarpa Boots

I have a pair of Mountain Master Mountaineering boots that are made by a sister company Fabiano

both are made in Italy, my Mountaineering boots have been resoled several times, its not something that can be done by just any shoe repair or resole shop. I send mine back to the parent company to have it done, they aren't done every year but like I said if not done right the boot fit is WAY OFF.

I have tried the military boots and found them to be lacking in many areas and my FOOT hurt like hell when I used them in a rocky environment the main thing that I don't like about them is the lack of an Arch support, I have very high arches, if I have a lack of support in that area im hurting.

If my boots don't have enough room for good innersoles, such as some Danners, I cut out an inner sole from one of those plastic disposable cutting boards. Makes things slippery enough to cut down on blisters.

Boy, you boys are sure a bunch of fancy Dans.;) For the last many years, my hunting boots are a pair of Danners that were not the top end boot, but they work for me. Before that, I forget the brand of the hunting boots I used for years. I just remember that they had vibram soles. In the early 70's, if I didnt get into the snow, I wore a pair of jungle boots that I was "saving for the revolution".;)

Ditto on the wool socks. One of the better investments in hunting attire for the well dressed "huntsman".

I will give you my thoughts on my boots when we get back, we are going to take a trip to break them in for hunting season. My Birthday is Sunday the 6th 61 years old, (I don't feel that old?) :) was asked at a combination party on the 4th of July, what I wanted for my Birthday??? Had to think about that for a least a millisecond and said to horse pack the grand loop with my little Pard Danny, being 12 years old he's up for it. When Penny surprised me  and said THEN GO AND QUIT ASKING!! Happy Birthday :-laf

We are going to do a loop in the 3 wilderness, Great Bear, Bob Marshall, Scapegoat. I don't know who made the guess-ta-meant but its said to be close to 350 miles. Do some fishing, scouting of game for the upcoming hunting season and to get away from all the noise around here with the TOURISTS Oo.
Should be a good trip no chores to do, no building of anything other than a fire and pitch a tent. No wife figuring out something else for me to do :)

Danny and I are sorting out our gear and re-supply points and will leave on Tue. the 8th and come back ? Penny gave me until the end of the month, then we have to start to supply the hunting camp, what a bum deal that is :-laf that will last the whole month of Aug. and part of Sept, then hunting camp, another terrible thing, My Son, New Son-in-law, 2 BIL's, 2 friends and I are going to take the first 8 days of the season and go shoot something to eat ;) Each I Hope.

Along with that I have to take a guy Goat hunting, 2 guys Elk hunting and do the packing in and out of camp. So I SHOULD be able to give you a pretty good idea if the boots will hold up after that. ;)

I used to be 61, pushing 66 I can feel it in my bones :D I need Genos to stock some replacement parts for me. Go get em BIG. I like my Whites boots too.

Got things packed up and ready to slap on the mules backs to head out tomorrow AM. We are going to help out my Nephew pack his clients to fish camp, and then head up river a few hours to our first nights camp. Will be there long enough to set things up maybe get a fish or two and have a fire a song or three and look at the stars thru our open tent flap until one falls on our heads and knocks us out for the night.

Take care and see ya's in a few weeks, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8BnkSR0owY

Vaya con Dios
