Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting Liberty Gun Safe?

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I decided to go with the Savage Model 11 compact in 308, just picked it up this morning. It comes with a pre-mounted Nikon 3-9x scope and overall I'm quite impressed with the package considering it was just barely over $500. Comes with a 50% off coupon for a full size stock too when he is ready. Off to the range tomorrow!

congrats, NOW get to the range and see how it shoots
they have some pretty good LOW recoil ammo too, from some makers, good to start a kid off with too, to help on the recoil side of things

I am eager to shoot it, maybe even more so than my son! I don't think recoil is going to be an issue for him as it has a nice recoil pad. Besides, I need to sight it in with the actual ammo he'll be hunting with.

The scope is surprisingly good as is the accutrigger, hopefully it will group well. I will let you know...

Patriot - The choices in a left hand youth model from Savage are slim, .243, 7mm-08, and .308. The .243 is too small for elk and the 308 is cheaper and easier to find than the 7mm.

lower recoil/power ammo can still be used for hunting with?
just have to pick shots and range a little more so., but it can for sure be done

Well after a day of shooting I have to say I'm pleased. The rifle comes with a surprisingly nice Nikon 3-9x scope that was very easy to sight in, before I had gone through a single box of ammo I had my previous three shots in the bullseye at 100 yards. At that point I handed it over to my son with another box of ammo and he really enjoyed shooting it despite being a little nervous at first (he had never shot anything larger than a 223 prior to that). So after another 20+ rounds and a big smile on his face my son has a nice shooting 308 that fits him and at a very affordable price that fit me. Those of you who recommended the Savage did not steer us wrong! Thank you.
