I have a 2016 2500 that only has 5K miles on it because I prefer to drive my 2001 that runs like a bat out of hell....I had to entertain a customer the other day so I got out the nice shiny 2016 to drive to our destination. We were going up a grade and a newer F150 pickup (ecoboost) pulls up and accelerates in front of me. It was not a raptor. I figured I would be able to reel him in but I could not catch him. I didn't realize these new trucks are such dogs....is there anything I can do to wake this thing up a little without affecting warranty?

My 2001 would have left him searching for oxygen to breathe...I'm not used to getting yanked by v6 fords.

New RAMs are for towing, not racing. Hook both up to 12-14K and repeat the climb.

The 2500 will weigh in at 7000-8500 lbs unloaded. The aluminum F-150 is very light. I don't want to be in one of those if there was an accident. It is not uncommon for a v6 to have 250-300 HP. And mine is only 350 HP IIRC. Torque is what makes them different.
HP might get you to the top first unloaded. Torque is useful when towing

The new 3.5 ecoboost has 375 hp and 470 torque, that is more torque than my 97 had off the lot. The power comes on very quickly too. Throw in a 10 speed transmission...these trucks are fast.

My 2018 F150 Crew Cab weights 5200# and with that 3.5l Ecoboost, it is just stupid fast. Almost unnecessary to be honest with you (sign I'm getting old I guess).

What mods do you have on your 01?

My 98 had +50 hp injectors and a Smarty set on 7. The only thing it would do that my 14 won't is roast the tires on demand. Acceleration is comparable between the two, other than that the 14 is hands down a better tool for hauling and towing. Not to mention a factory integrated exhaust brake, MUCH better service brakes, a better ride and quiet interior. I'd never thought I'd say it after over a decade of gen 2 ownership but there's no way I'd go back.
Guess I'm gettin' old too, J.

My '01 has injectors, turbo, intake, drag comp, DTT trans, exhaust, etc....it runs really strong and only other heavily modded diesels have been able to run with me in all the years I've been driving it. No gasser has ever had a chance. They've always been left in smoke after trying to instigate something one the fwy (I never instigate but it seems like other trucks see my triple gages on the pillar and want to flex their muscles).

So from the feedback above it sounds like the newer trucks are just slow....I figured there might be something like a modern edge comp that would give me another 60-75hp or so without affecting warranty. The new truck is nice of course but it sure is a dog....

Well the Ram answer to the eco boost and Raptor is on its way in the form of a Hellcat powered Ram. Well see what 707 Hemi horses and that ZF 8HP90 handles things.

Both my ‘97 and ‘06 would walk all over my ‘14 towing that load. They’d get better mileage too.

Possibly, but you forgot to include the $10k+ in engine and trans upgrades needed to compare to a stock truck .
Even assuming your old trucks exceeded 350ish hp, they'd still be at a disadvantage being short on gear or gears depending on trans.
Gotta disagree on the mileage bit either way. Did a rare solo run to take my boy to the air port Saturday morning, filled up before I left the house and once I got back. Hand calculated 19.1 mpg with the cruise set at 78 mph over the course of 140 miles. Towing has always returned favorable mileage as well, and I've tallied a solid 10k+ miles with similar loads I've pulled with my gen 2's over the last decade plus.
Maybe I'm just an exception rather than the rule, but I really doubt it.

Editing post to better reflect my trip to the airport. At least 75% freeway miles (RT90), remaining split between 55-60 mph two lane roads and city driving once we exited the freeway en route to the airport.

My 2001.5 with stage 1 injectors, Comp in EZ mode(timing only) PDR35-12W, exhaust, and custom DTT transmission, would run away and hide from our 2015. However, like JR stated, towing is no comparison. 2015 wins that one hands down.

sometimes we remember our good old days vehicle with a fondness that is far more of a figment of our imagination
than what really happened.

case in point, I owned 5 different Camaro's and Firebirds over the years.
fast forward to 2016 and I bought a 2012 Camaro with aV6 for the OL.
truthfully that 300 HP V6 with the 6 speed auto will run corcles around any of the previous
Camaro's /Firebirds I owned, all of which had a V8.

Had rented an Expedition with the 3.5 EcoBoost - that Thing is damn fast. Wanted to buy one when Home but isn't available her over. So got a Hemi Durango....

No, I didn’t forget to include anything. I bought the ‘97 used with low miles. What I paid for the truck plus all the upgrades wasn’t even in the same balllpark as the ‘14. The ‘06 I bought new. That truck plus upgrades was still a lot less than the ‘14. For mileage, disagree all you want, the ‘14 is a complete disgrace compared to the other two. As for reliability, the ‘97 and ‘06 combined didn’t have half the problems of this ‘14.

NOTE, 2015 was when RAM seems to have gotten there act together. I lot less issues verses 2013's and 2014's!

This is true, and the effortless grace that these new vehicles provide is worlds different than how it was.
However, there's a certain character that vehicles of various vintage possess that make the ride worthwhile. The new V6 300 hp Camaro might be a 13-14 second car, but it takes a certain person to make the old car perform- with manual steering, leg press clutch, bias ply tires etc etc. it's a whole different experience. Almost like taking a current production limited truck and comparing it to a stick shift 1gen.
