Not wanting to get too far off topic, but the new/old -which is better- conversation gets me perked up. Clear to me that one cannot replace the other. Two different things.
This guy clearly thinks the old days were better!

This is true, and the effortless grace that these new vehicles provide is worlds different than how it was.
However, there's a certain character that vehicles of various vintage possess that make the ride worthwhile. The new V6 300 hp Camaro might be a 13-14 second car, but it takes a certain person to make the old car perform- with manual steering, leg press clutch, bias ply tires etc etc. it's a whole different experience. Almost like taking a current production limited truck and comparing it to a stick shift 1gen.

its exactly the same. you ever hear some of these guys who say their 2nd Gen would outpull the current truck and you know their mind is playing tricks on them. LOL

back in the day I had a 91 Chevy 3500 with the big block. it was the mag daddy tow vehicle to own back then ( it was) but you look at the specs on it and it was 235hp and 385 torque. LOL I used the stuffing out of it too, but thats what we had back then and we thought it was good

If you said '81, I would agree, but by '91 and the intercooled 1gen was out kicking butt and laying down the empire we have here today. Before that I had a Dodge dually with an injected and built 400 that was much stronger than a stock anything in the late 80's.

The torque management on the HD Rams is there whether it is hooked up to pull anything or not. The torque management is for a combination of safety unloaded (it will not smoke It's wheels), and self preservation when loaded to the gills.

The F150 has respectable tow ratings for It's class. But the F150 is in a different class of trucks and should be expected to have different performance (less torque managemenr) characteristics than a designated tow vehicle.

Yeah, those 2nd gens were legendary for going 500k to 1 million miles. But their torque numbers were about half of the 4th gens. IIRC.

if I remember right the 91 Cummins was rated at a whopping 160 hp and 400 lbs ft of torque versus my TBI injected 454 in my Chevy putting out 235 hp and 385 torque. not much difference, is there. LOL

less than that little Ecoboost in the F150

memories, might be beautiful but they generally aren't so clear

I'm surprised. I thought you knew the value of torque. That's what makes towing 15k a pleasure. And the fact that it would do it all the way up pikes peak and not overheat or complain at all like a big rig.
It's a memory but a fact as well. That truck was an excellent package that caused Ford and GM to erase their drawing boards.

It’s pretty clear the “new truck smell” to you is equivalent to some guys intimate experiences. You know the ones I’m talking about. They’re so blinded by that smell they think that every new relationship(truck) is better than the last until they get burned and realize what they had from
the start treated them the best.

Hey, I loved my 2001.5 for 14 years and 120K. Had fun spending a lot of money on it for bombs etc.

Fast forward to the 2015. I place my hand in the door handle and then climb in and push the start button. Hookup to 16K 5th wheel and head down the road at 24,500 combined very comfortably. Can't do that with a 2nd gen, even with it was a dually.

Completely different animals. Would I have like to have keep the 2001.5 also, maybe if things had be different regarding garage space etc. It was rude, crude and fun.

New owners horses run to the corner of the field when she is a half mile away to greet her home.

Put the Cummins on a chassis dyno and see the tale of the tape. The Cummins looses a little off the crank rating but the gasser is in the basement...Lol

I had an '82 C30 rollback w/454, and it was D-O-G. Also had an '04 2500 w/8.1 and Ally-it was a hot rod around town and towed just OK at @8 mpg. My '05 CTD would tow circles around it.

I have a 2016 2500 that only has 5K miles on it because I prefer to drive my 2001 that runs like a bat out of hell....I had to entertain a customer the other day so I got out the nice shiny 2016 to drive to our destination. We were going up a grade and a newer F150 pickup (ecoboost) pulls up and accelerates in front of me. It was not a raptor. I figured I would be able to reel him in but I could not catch him. I didn't realize these new trucks are such dogs....is there anything I can do to wake this thing up a little without affecting warranty?

My 2001 would have left him searching for oxygen to breathe...I'm not used to getting yanked by v6 fords.

I think you're over-estimating the capabilities of your 2001 Dodge and underestimating the capabilities of the 3.5l ecoboost F-150.

The F-150 is a lighter truck, with a powerful and somewhat torquey engine. Why are you confused/angry that your 2016 Ram 2500 wasn't able to keep up with the F-150? Why do you even own a Ram 2500 if that's the type of performance that you're looking for.

Tuning is available. Any malfunction cause by said tune will not be covered by your warranty. Tune at your own risk.

Overestimating my '01??? Hmmmm, I don't think so...been driving it very hard for many many years. Dragging, pulling, Baja trips, etc. just put a little TLC into it recently and it's still running like a bat out of hell.

And where do you interpret from my post that that I'm angry??? Pretty funny actually. I was just surprised that a lifted F150 smoked my new '16, nothing more. I can promise you if I was driving my '01 when this happened this thread would not exist because I would've left him in my vapor trail. After reading the responses above I've accepted my new truck is a dog, but it's a nice dog :) Have fun guys.

Meh. We'll see where that eco boost is 10 years from now. We KNOW where all these Rams will be- doing what they were made to do.

Wayne, 100% agree with you on the reliability question. However, they are a whole lot of fun right now. Nothing is guaranteed a minute from now let alone 10 years. In the meantime, I'm having a hard time keeping the :D off my face driving this thing. It is that good.

Your truck weighs 8200 ish lbs and has about 385 HP.
The F150 weighs between 4000 and 5200 lbs (depending upon features, cab and bed length) and has about 365 HP.

For someone that races, I'm surprised that you thought you even had a prayer. For a truck that weighs half as much and only loses 20 overall HP, not including torque mgmt, it should have blown you off the line. I don't race and even I know the numbers weren't in your favor.

We have a 14 Ram 1500 crew cab short bed 4x4 at work. Essentially the same body as my 14 3500 but in a half ton with a 395 hp 5.7 hemi, 8 speed transmission and 3.55 gears vs my 3.42. That thing is a dang rocket!! I won't incriminate myself any further .

I don't follow Ford's 1/2 ton specs. Until now, no gasser has ever been able to run with me, so there was no need to pay attention. But I've learned Ford has stepped it up with their ecoboost, now I know. Their truck is very quick, and my new truck....not so much.

Now that's a match I'd like to see.
