I used the new truck to pull my track hoe today (only 6 ton + trailor- towed great) to help my wifes friends husband trench in his electrical service.
I noticed he had two 7. 3's. Thinking. "We'll, at least he's smart enough to buy diesels"
After the trenching is finished he asks "How do you like the Dodge?" I say " alote". Then asks "How does the Cummins tow?" I reply "I like the low end grunt. "
Out of curtacy I asked how he likes his fords.
Now he starts telling me how the ford diesels are the greatest things since the invention of the wheel.
I didn't realize how mis-informed I was about diesels all this time.
I found out:
a) The 5. 9 Cummins is pretty much to the limit of its power capability because it's only 5. 9 liters & is only made to handle 225 hp ,whereas, the fords are tuned waaaay down.
b) ... . and if you want any more power at all out of a dodge then you need to change the intake, exhaust, and most of the drivetrain, wheras, the ford you don't need to do anything but chip it. But even if you don't chip it it allready comes with 800 lbs of torque from the factory.
c) The power stroke weighs alote more than the Cummins.
d) Dodge had to take off the air it's "Best in class" towing advertising because it was mis-leading. He claims that the "Best in class towing" was because you can order a 1500 Dodge truck with a Cummins making it an unfair comparision. (at this time he made it clear there is no way that a Cummins could compare with the Power Strokes in the 3/4 up class - but only have a chance to out tow the gassers in the 1/2 ton trucks) Yep that's why Dodge had to take their adverts off the air.
e) Last, but certainly not least, Now Ford has what is known as the FORD 6 that you can get in the 450's (he said ford doesn't offer the 1 ton anymore) which is a 6 cylinder that runs even better than the 7. 3 !!!! WOW -- WAS I EVER IMPRESSED
What could you say to all those facts. Pretty overwhelming to say the least.
So I said ,being our wives were friends and all, "It sounds like Ford makes the perfect truck for people just like you" ... ... . then loaded my 6-ton track hoe on my 3 axle trailor hoping my piuny little truck with its piuny little Cummins could get it moving down the road.
Has anyone else been exposed to this kind of knowlege?????????
