New pics in my reader's rigs

Thanks to TDR Member Shawn Frazier, I now have some updated pics of the current installation of the vent kit. Some were having trouble with the electrical connectors and fuel disconnects on the tank. Being able to see what you're working with should make it a little easier.

To help line up the threaded plastic locking collar that holds the sending unit down, look at the threads on the collar and the threads on the tank. Locate the beginning of the first thread on the collar, and first thread on the tank. Make sure you align them before you start tightening the collar. This should make the installation easier.

Scott

Scott,

I'll include that in the new instructions and hopefully it will help. That collar was a bear to get on straight. It always seems to want to cross thread.

When I replaced the sender on my '01 and did some tank mods on a couple of phords, which has the same type nut, I used a heat gun to warm up the nut. This isn't a lot of heat but it made all the difference in the world getting that thing started back on. Hope this helps.

Hyde

Hyde,

Thanks for the advice. It's now in the updated instructions. I can e-mail the instructions to anyone who has an older version that has not installed the kit yet. Just send me a PM or an e-mail.

Got mine installed today. It installed in about an hour and will save me hundreds of hours over the life of the truck. My ten minute top of time is now about 20 seconds!!

THANK YOU!!!

kit installed and tank capacity

Thanks for the kit. My 20 yearold took pity on me and did the wrestle the tank part yesterday. Drove 55 miles past 0 on the till empty readout. Still seemed to be 2-3 gallons left in the tank. Pump clicked off today after 36. 5 and took only . 4 more filled to the brim. Guess the 34 gallon shortbed tank now has at least 37 gallons of useable fuel and maybe 40. I cut 3/8" off of the bulkhead fitting. Much less of a pain to fill up.

I'm opting for a long bed '05.

Will you be looking into a kit for the new year model?

I'll check on the '05's. I think they will use the same tank as they are the same body style. The kit should work, but I'll check just in case.

We did 2 trucks tonite. Both on near empty tanks thankfully. Best $40 I've spent on mine. This will save me enough time to to justify in a couple of months. I just can't wait to fill up again. Thanks Spooled-up!

Hyde

That was a pretty straight forward install. Thanks to Spooled-up for the detailed instructions. We got Hyde's done in about an hour, and after doing it once, we were able to do mine in about 30 minutes. When I filled up I couldn't believe how much faster it was. If anyone is one the fence about this mod, I say go for it.

Wowwwweeeee !

All I can say is "Wowwwweeeee !" Dave came down to my place of work at S&S Tire in Lexington, KY. this evening to perform the install for me. I, too, was completely astonished at the improvement this package offers. If you're straddling the fence, go ahead and take the plunge..... you'll appreciate it this winter..... no more freezing of the family jewels whilst topping off if you have Dave's super-dooper vent kit installed on your 3rd Gen truck. Just do it ! I believe it took the pre-paid pump LONGER to complete my Discover credit card transaction than it did to top off ! Dave is a stand-up guy and treated my truck with as much care as if it were his very own. Thanks again Dave..... you da man !

I can't remember who had asked about PVC being OK to use with diesel, yes it is. PVC is resistent to petrolium products, most plastisized(sp) PVC is not.

While I was helping gsbrockman install his vent kit in Lexington, KY, he graciously offered to let TDR members use his shop after hours to do more of these installs. I would be happy to show up on a saturday evening or sunday when I can get one of those days off and do a few installs. If you're interested, please send me a PM and we can discuss it. Thanks to Greg for the "above and beyond" offer! This is one of the nicest tire shops I've ever been in, and Greg is one heck of a guy to work with. We had a great time! We did his install on the alignment rack and used a jack that was pretty much made to lower fuel tanks. It was a breeze with all those tools!

Can fuel expand? If you filled a glass with diesel fuel, would the level of fuel be higher on a hot day compared to a cold day?

I've personally never heard of this. Anyone have an answer?

Yes, fuel expands. The coefficient of thermal expansion for #2 diesel is 0. 00046 per degree Fahrenheit. That means 34 gallons of fuel pumped at 50 degrees F will expand to 34. 8 gallons when warmed to 100 degrees F.

How long does it take to do the mod? I understand the easiest way is to drop the tank, so going about it that way and assuming that the mechanic (me) know my butt from a hole in the ground what is a reasonable timeframe?

From the time the pump kicks off the first time until I get the other 4 gallons in and the truck is literally topped off is almost 10 minutes. I figure that adding all the time I waste waiting for the fuel foam to disperse, I can bite the bullet and do the mod.
