Alternator off a Cummins on a 67 Chevelle?

I think Im gonna be sick. Just finished the assembly of my 427 short block today and when I went to torque the first head I hear a snap . so I pull the head back off to find that the bolt hole where the head alignment dowel goes had a helicoil put in at one time and it had just pulled the whole thing out of the deck. Now I have a huge hole (1/2 or so) where I need 7/16 threads. New helicoil wont grab the block the hole is too big. Any ideas??? :{ :{ :{

I am not an expert on welding, but I think it might be possible to put a plug weld into the block and redrill and retap for the bolt. I am sure that someone on this forum will have a fix.

Hang in there, pour yourself a cold one, and try not to stress too hard. I feel for you.

There is a thread repair system called Easy Lock that uses standard threads on the insert. You should be able to get a 7/16 ID Easy Lock which will have, if memory serves correct have a 9/16 OD.

Good Luck

Bruce

What you are looking for are these things called "Keysert® Key-Locking Screw Thread Inserts" or something similar, you can find them a most any machine shop supply.

Here is one web page:

http://www.newmantools.com/key.htm

They come in carbon or stainless steel, thin or thick wall. The thin wall will screw into 9/16-12 threads and the thick wall will screw into 5/8-11 threads, this will repair back to a 7/16 course or fine thread hole.

I'm sure they could be found at MSC or similar web site.

Hope that helps!
