my engine is stock... but i do tow a boat. . 97 auto trans. . right now i have a stripped input shaft. . where should i go?. .

It's your hard earned cash. Do a bit of searching. See who is near you and try to drive each of them. They each have their special feel.

Bellflower Transmission (562) 867-5240 They put in my Goerend Triple Disk with an ATS valve body and trans commander. They deal with ATS. Great job, after I trashed my trans towing.

I agree, things always seem to get a little heated with trans threads. I have ridden in several trucks equipped with various manufactures units. Then I made the decision.



DTT.



Absolutley the top dog for performance, reliability and holding power.

i have had nothing but hell since i got a DTT installed, installed in january rebuilt twice and needs it again







like josh said, find someone close, dtt dont mind testing parts & theories at my expense or theres

Nothing like bashing a company that has a long history of coming through for it's customers with your second post no less.



Odd how so many others have had just the opposite experience to you. I'll keep my DTT. BTW, almost 60K miles without skipping a beat. Let me know how AAmco does on your next rebuild.

Where did you get that he was using an AAMco transmission for the next one? I too personally know of a guy who had his DTT transmission tore down 3 times for problems. He had the updated drum, billet shafts too. For the forth time he did not go to DTT for the repair.
 
Had my DTT done in BC by Bill. Complete rebuild and have no problems. Really puts the power to the ground. ATS, Gorearend or Suncoast are also good trannies. You can't go wrong with any of them. Just like anything else, the dealer/installer has alot to do with how things go.
 
Another vote for Goerend Bros. He shipped to me and I had my local builder do my 48re with his parts. Top notch guy(s) in my book. And truck is a different animal in all respects now... :--)

You've got to be joking. The number 1 company in this field and you're on your way to your 3rd repair? Who's doing your work? It can't be BK or any of his people because Bill and his people simply don't operate that way. Oh, by the way - who was it who did your initial install???

yes it is odd, fishinguide, maybe you didnt read all my posts? i chose DTT because in my opinion they had the best reputation, btw i am not new to diesel forum's just using my real name now.



im sure Bill k, John, Scott, JT from ks or James from texas can give you a few more details on my transmission.
 
I just installed a stage 5 ATS and i really like it, waiting on my co pilot so i can fine tune the lockup speed. Really puts the power to the ground

the whole story is so bad it seems like a joke, i keep thinking these guys can get it done right but wtf?

I have a 97 as well.

I have a moderate amount of power. 370's and a 10 plate. (Enough to snap the input)

My trans shifts firm and positive.

The convertor clutches wil hold all the power I can dish out even when locked up in 2nd gear.

The tourque multipication is just right it allows the engine to get enough rpm to spool the hybred 35/40 turbo with ease.

The trans works a thousand times better than stock.

However I am the pickiest person on the planet when it comes to shift points.

If I could talk myself into mounting a floor shifter and going to a full manual valve body I would!

I have the (no longer available) Em-Jay controller.

With this controller I can move shift points all over the place.

The 97 trans shift points are still very limited.

I still cannot get the the 1-2 shift point high enough under part throttle accelleration.

Clint drove my truck and stated it was one of the best shifting (shift points)

97's that he has seen.

I still wish I could get it better.

PS All things considered I'd spend the 5 G's again in a second for the ATS.



Also Worn out alternator brushes will cause your trans to go haywire.

I wish these discussions would get more in line with "how" the transmission is expected to perform, rather than this company is #1. I think the person asking the questions would get much more out of it.



IMO



Tight converters make chargers harder to light (increased lag) but once on boost feel great. They also require less lock-up surface area because those materials are under less strain when engaging (less rpm to recover). They also work nice with N2O IMO. They also generate more heat while stopped and in gear, and create more of a "push" on the brakes.



Loose converters allow rpm which reduces lag, but also less movement and will generate more heat when accelerating in fluid mode. These converters are harder on lock-up clutch material because they recover so much rpm when engaging. They generate less heat while stopped and in gear and less push on the brakes.



Somewhere in between is what I like and that is what I have. I don't want real tight, and I don't want stock either. Because I like some rpm in fluid mode, I believe it's best to have a billet cover on the TC and triple lock up disk. This has proven to make my transmission reliable for daily, towing, and strip use. Works great in stop and go traffic which Atlanta is famous for. My choice was just what I needed.



Valvebody set-ups also make or break a unit as far as what you feel. some like hard shifts, some don't. But if you ride in a truck that shifts hard and don't like it, don't think all of them are that way. Tell the transmission vendor what you want/expect.





So when you are test driving what you want, not only ask who's transmission, but also what level is the converter and so on. Make sure you purchase what fits your needs and wants and you'll most likely be happy with your selection.
