I agree with the oil sample. Its all about "base lines". Thats why we scream "gages before mods" to everyone. Get some oil samples taken with a stock set up and then get some taken with whatever brand it is you like. Let the scientist decide which is better. You cant argue facts.

Get the oil sample done to see what your engine is doing regardless of the filter issue. Consider that a bonus.

I expect the Psychotty cowl induction setup to help egt when ambient air is lower temperature than underhood air. I would run some pop riveted ductwork from my stock airbox to the cowl if I could stand the turbo noise.

I hate to do it, but, I have to plead my ignorance. This is going to hurt.
The air filter, filters the air before it is mixed with the fuel? It is then injected into the cylinder? What does this have to do with crankcase oil and oil samples? What is the size opening in a fuel injector? Would you not have a fuel injector clog before you would have the dirt avoid getting ejected out through the exhaust valves and slip on down past the compression rings and into the crank case then end up in the oil sample cup? Please, someone save me from my diesel ignorance before my wife finds out I really don't know everything! #ad

For those of you who want to run a paper filter and are still paranoid about getting a good seal, there are some cylindrical air filters that will fit under the hood. I am currently running the equivalent of an AF932 on my truck. The dimesions are similar to the RE-0880, but check out the Fleetguard site for the actuals. I was told it was a John Deere tractor filter (holds lots of dirt). I have a filter minder, and it has not moved yet (running 34 psi boost).

I don't have any pictures of the setup, but I did draw a quick AutoCad & Microstation drawing if anyone wants it.

What Vaugn sez, and EZ94 touch on the same basic reason SOME folks have bad experiences with K&N - and they MAY WELL heve the SAME problem with ANY filter if they use the same checking methods. The newer filter housings are NOTORIOUS for providing poor sealing surfaces to the air filters - ANY air filters, and then allowing contaminated air to bypass the filter media. Such experiences MAY only occur ocassionally, depending on the care used by the installer - or frequently, on poorer fitting housings. To merely blame the FILTER for these problems, it would seem a good idea to make dern sure the housing is free of defect, otherwise switching to another filter type won't do a bit of good. This subject comes up frequently in several groups I participate in, and the common denominator by a landslide is POOR FILTER HOUSING FIT, and that poor fit often occurs with PAPER elements as well as aftermarket types. Make sure you place the blame where it belongs!

AND, for ME, the advantage of the K&N lies primarily in the fact that a $10 cleaning kit lasts 2 cleanings, 2 years worth, and that's the ONLY expense as compared to annually replacing the paper jobbie at nearly $30. At that rate, my K&N has saved me nearly $250 in replacement costs so far... #ad

The amazing thing about Psychotty's system is that it lowers egt's all the time. There's not a single user who hasn't noticed a reduction in temperatures... albeit some more than others. But lower egt's it does. It's just an amazing invention.

The Amsoil is a very good filter.
On occasion, they tend to be over-oiled. That happened to me and oil ended up everywhere... on the turbo and worse yet, in the intercooler. Had to flush solvent through the intercooler to get rid of the excess oil.
If you're using it in the stock box, make sure,like every other stock filter, that it is sealed around the edges. However, no visual inspection will verify it is because you can't see what happens under a high vacume condition. The only way to be sure is to have your oil analyzed.
 
OH Joe if you can't stand the turbo noise maybe you outa sell on sicky and get a gasser. LOL
Joe and I have agreed to disagree on the K&N issue.

I am also a PSA user and am very happy with it. My last three oil checks have all been under 6 silicon, the last one the oil had 15K on it. The inside of my hose and turbo are clean and will pass the white glove test.

I have seen two K&N filter laterly for gasser that didn't seem to have enough filter material inside the screen. both of these came from Checker and where exchanged and the second one where fine.

I have seen one AFE filter and it looks to be a better K&N type filter with a heavier duty screen and denser(sp) filter media. I wish they had a Re-0880 replacement to fit in my Psycotty housing.

The conjecture about K&N filters never seems to end.

I've had about every air filter combination there is on my truck in the time I've owned it since I bought it new in 1994... including stock, K&N in the stock housing, Amsoil in the stock housing and finally, a K&N RE 0880 in a PSA filtration system. And with each system I've performed oil analysis. Holding any filter "up to the light" doesn't mean squat... oil analysis is the only sure way to measure filtration because it tells you how much dirt is getting through and that's the bottom line... how much dirt is in the oil... everything else is pure conjecture.

As has been said so many times before, the problems associated with filtration center primarily around the design of the stock air box rather than the type of filtering medium. The culprit in the stock air box is the seal around the edges of the box. It is nearly impossible to get a perfect seal around the perimiter of the filter. Because the Cummins sucks in so much air any leakage around the filter will permit dust to bypass the filter. As a result the filter takes the blame rather than the inherently flawed air box.

The finest, most thorough job of filtration I've had is the K&N RE 0880 inside the PSA system. My last oil analysis came back with a silicon reading of 4 which is so low as to be insignificant and the filter that produced that reading was a K&N.

Unlike the stock air box, the RE 0880 is cylindrical in shape and open only at the intake end thus making it virtually impossible for air to bypass the filter.

In summary, when set up properly, the K&N filter is as good as any on the market. The results from oil analysis speak for themselves. So, please, no more "holding it up to the light" comparisons.

K&N air filters have been in my last 3 work trucks with out any problems. I've never seen dust by the air boxes or oil.

Working in the off road is the best test for any air filter,and thats what my trucks all do. Oil samples have always been good.
When you hold the filter up to the light some light spots do shine through.
Most air filters do filter better when there a little dirty. I've used the K&N in the Off road expecting the best filtration possable.
Maybe I'll have to try one of those amsoil filters, so I can compare the two.
 
I had one. K&N flows more air, but also flows more dirt. Switched to Amsoil.

EZ, I have to disagree with you about the value of holding a new K&N up to the light. IMHO, K&N has a major quality control problem, which is at the root of this controversy. I use K&Ns in my 2 gassers, because they definitely give a couple of mpg increase with naturally aspirated engines. But the last one I bought didn’t pass the eyeball test described by Gary. I took it in to the lab and checked it out with a dissecting microscope and found that many of the holes were greater than 100 microns. Now that will pass dirt regardless of the oiling state. I exchanged the filter for another that passed both the eyeball and microscope test. So there are some bad ones out there but the rest are fine. I have never seen silica readings over 14 even in my 4-runner that I run out in the desert. BTW, I use an Amsoil filter in the Dodge. Since there no mpg or hp advantage in a turbocharged engine, I don’t want to take any chances. But I can appreciate the Scotty system for lowering EGT in a bombed rig. I would just recommend a good visual inspection of the unit before installation.

The only downside to an Amsoil filter I can think of is they are a little harder to clean and reoil compared to the K&N. That is what I've heard, I never cleaned my RE0880 when I had it nor my current Amsoil filter (not enough miles in both cases).

The Amsoil filter is quite affordable, only $34 if you are a member ($40-ish list price).

I'm not convinced we will see the dirt in an oil analysis.

Im thinking there is so much flow through the system, how is dirt going to get in the oil??
This stuff is blasted in, compressed & exploded & blasted out in one fell swoop! Im just not picturing much dirt entering the oil system. Not saying none will, but am saying not very much of it can. Just my opinion.

VA, DD1's, PS Boost module & elbow, BD brake... also, Nitrous Oxide piped direct into the block (stealth - to keep the warranty), 10 gallon per minute fuel pump, ECM right out of Don Garlit's Top Fueler (he gave it to me) (for letting him ride in my truck), Super Modified DD1 Injectors ("Hand Honed" with a 1/4" reamer & my 12v Makita). :) More BOMBING to come. .
 
After debating with myself for a long time, I chunked my K&N. I would inspect the turbo blades and then try and decide if the black on there was normal or not. I would wipe around on the intake hose and try and see if there was any dust there or not. The honest truth is, I just couldn't bring myself to trust grease to seal the filter. Then, I kept coming back to the point Joe Donnelly has made in the past of no measurable difference in power (hey, the dyno don't lie). So I had to ask myself, if there's no measurable difference in power, why am I fooling with this thing?

I have to run about one mile down a dirt road to get home every day. I put on a wix air filter about 10,000 miles ago. I took the hose off today and checked the blades on the turb and there are as clean as my wife table. I will stick with the wix.

Do ya really want your rings sliding over a film of oil contaminated with SOLID PARTICLES that the air filter "Flowed" through? Clearances and oil technology can only do so much, if one lets in enough OR larger solids into the combustion area, some of it will make it into the oil and be circulated until/if the oil filter caputures it/them.
