i was haveing a wonderful saturday drive.....(getgag blew)

than some 35 miles from home and at 65 mph my world changed, it was a very nice

day windows down heater on high and all at once bang grind and a sound

of tow combs rubbing each other and no more 5th geat nothing in traffic

starting to slow and a little whiet somke from under the truck i got it in to 4th

gear and limped it about 30 miles from home and than a new sound as if i blew off a turbo boot kind of a rubber band snapping sound the truck bucked and jerked and continued on just fine 1 steep hill and 2 miles from home i had to stop the truck for the light at the end of the off ramp more white smoke

and no gears at all nothing 1 through 5 :--) now waiting for help and

watching the traffic back up behind me and people honking (i guess they

have no ideas what 4-way flashers mean and why i would be over 80 back fromthe stop bar half on the curb) i get out and take a peek i wished i wouldnt have... . all my amsoil dripping out from the seem between the bellhousing and

transmission all that oil . so i called the girl friend to bring her little truck and

pull me out of the way (and she did a 1st rate job) and place a call to a friend with a wrecker to tow me the rest of the way home (him i gave 50. 00)

grab my drain bucket and quickly pull the drain plug as to not fill the street with oil nothing comes out... . well not much so i take my screw driver poke it

up the drain hole..... and it was like christmas all kinds of gifts came out of

it including several gear teeth and that gets me to where i am at now... ...

what to do the truck is a 1993 (used to be)getrag 5 speed 4x4 truck

with 111,000 miles on it kdp is done over filled transmission with bypass filter

and ams oil 5w30 oil all the falling off silver paint was redone and some of the

blue i have oned the truck from new i picked it up with

165 miles on it in oct of 1992 i am really not sure what to do with it i would like to fix it but as you know its going to be big money to try to find a 5 speed and i am 99% sure i do not have a core what do you think?

options?

and what led up to this point..... the transmission had been a little loud for

some time but not bad when iput the filter on 4 years ago the trans case and oil was clean all seemed ok .

on my way to get a transmission (yep nother 5 speed) for my comuter car (toyota 4x4 p/u) i noticed what i thought was my cruse control acting

funny like it had a slight jerk to it but foot on throttle if was fine. !and on the way back my world changed... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

what is worse is the fact that my 700. 00 dollar toyota has 230,000 miles on it

the org transmission still works fine but is in need of syncrows and it falls out

of 5th gear on decel and i just waned to get a used one to go through and

r&r at my own pace and that truck had a very very hard life before i got it

and as bad as it sounds i have even thought of getting rid of my 1st gen

for a new(er)toyota i dont think i am going to have the bank to fix it and that is why i come to you for ideas and options ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... :-laf

Well there is a getrag in the classifieds that is stuck in 2nd gear, in your area I think. Bushwacker is up in your area too, he is still probably chasing the furry things in the woods, but he may be able to help you hunt something down. Do you run with the NW Bombers? I understand there are abunch of them up there, and they could help you.

Sounds like you may have lost a countershaft bearing, or maybe the input shaft seal failed and you lost the oil. At any rate with oil in the bell housing, you are probably going to need a differnt clutch, and it sounds like pretty extensive repairs in the transmission. A NV4500 conversion might be the best bet for you right now, unless you can find somebody to rebuilt it "cheaply".

Bring it on over to my house, I'll pull it for ya and see what we can do! ;) Dunno if your 'yota could haul the CTD all the way out here to Iowa.

Good luck, if it were mine I would fix it one way or another, I could not part with my truck, but I need the truck to pull my trailer.

I have a spare Getrag 360 that's rebuildable. I haven't decided what I'm going to do with it. My Getrag 360 has a synchro problem in 4th and a NV4500 would be so much quieter. The guy who gave it to me said he blew and oil seal and it fried the bearings. If you check out a place like quad4x4 they sell new NV4500's and no core is required but it costs upwards of $4500. You could buy a few yota's for that price, but no long bed and low on power. That's why my 1993 Toyota 4x4 stays home for longer trips.

what a depressing day

the toyota trans i just got has a chipped tooth on the in put and 5th gear

and its main bearing went away.

as for the dodge i pulled off the p. t. o cover and i can move up and down the counter shaft 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch at the front i did figure out

even with all the oil i lost i still drainde out about 4 qts !

the main shaft still feels tight but spin way to easy ... ... .

yea i could look in to the nv4500 conversion but is a lot ofmoney for an old truck

Its not a lot of money if you like the truck and plan to keep it a long time. I can't believe all the people that line up to put down $40-50,000 for a pickup truck. That's just sticker price, how much do they spend on making payments? About what, 6-7 months of truck payments on a new truck, compared to switching out transmissions on your paid for truck.

I guess its all how you look at it. It would not take many $700 month payments to completely rebuild my old first gen, and still have a pile of money left over.

Michael

i did e-mail quad4x4 dan said they where going to discontinue the conversion

or have a large price increase it looks like the conversion (with a clutch)

would be 4,400 dollar area plus shipping ! at this point and on the other hand

i get a used getrag and have to dump money it to it... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

or cut my losses... yea i know i dont realy want to do that just yet

Check E-bay I have seen rebuilt ones with no core needed for $800. It may not be easy but it's still cheaper than a conversion. Hang in there.

well

i went out yesterday before the wind and rain started

got both drivelines out, speedo adapter out, broke the cross-

member mounting bolts loose, slave cylnder off, a few bell housing bolts

broke looes or out so the journy begains.

also if anyone happens to have a copy ot the quad4x4 nv4500

conversion video i would like to see a copy of it no matter

what i end up doing

I'd sure look for the NV4500 - My '89 had a getrag and I was on my fourth one when the warrany ran out... and sold it before the next one became my problem. They don't seem to handle the load that engine puts on them well, even if most of your miles are unloaded.

My experience anyway.

Sorry for your troubles - hope the replacement runs for at least 500k without so much as a burp!

I feel your pain Brother... . My Getrag went out two weeks ago... I was pulling

a flatbed trailer with a minimal load from New Orleans up to Atlanta... and

I just got out on I12... and the wife says "What's that noise?"... . well...

at least I was not too far from the house... . I am going to make the NV4500

swap... . I have a rebuild kit and a new set of synchros that I was planning to

install..... but, since I have decided to marry this gal (my truck)... I am going

with the NV4500. I may not be able to get credit for my G360, bearing kit, or

synchro kit... . but, I got my transmission jack out... my torch... ripsaw... . and two

big gorillas to slap that thing in there... . stay in touch...

how much was your getrag kit?

just wondering (i dont think much of mine is left to

rebuild)

I cannot remember exactly how much the rebuild kit was... you can get the

bearing kit for around 175 and the synchro kit for 150 or so... or you can

get both kits for around 300 or so. I got mine from www.drivetrain.com

... and I am working on getting a NV4500 from www.standardtransmission.com

right now. Standard said they would accept my G360 core and rebuild kits

that I had and credit me. They are having trouble getting the bellhousing

right now which I believe is a factory item. I will check in with them again today.

And, like you, I am not sure what is left inside the transmission. I don't

know what else was eaten up in there... and I figure that I am going to keep

the truck for a long time anyway... . plus I have the money to do it right now.

so, all that weighs in. I remember reading the posts when I got my truck

4 years ago about all the guys with Getrag problems... . and I could hear

noise from my own transmission... I knew that it needed attention... I just did not

get to it in time... . it's a tough decision to make... . if you tow allot...

you better get set up with a NV4500 ... . if you are stretched for cash currently

then a rebuild may be for you... it depends on what may have been damaged

when the transmission failed... then again you may need your truck back

quickly. ALso, you gotta figure that while you are replacing the transmission then

you should go ahead and put in a new clutch and pressue plate... and that will

run you 300-400 bucks as well... . if you have the engine hopped up in

any way you may want to look at a beefier clutch than stock... . just my

thoughts on the matter... . I will try and keep you posted on my progress

... . since your truck will be down for awhile it would be a good idea as well to get

after some other items... I replaced the rear wheel seals... rear brakes

... cleaned and repacked the rear bearings... drained the diff fluid and,

put on a new set of rear shocks. I also have my driveshaft over at the

machine shop being shortened by 6. 5 inches for the NV4500 and I am

having them drop in all new U-joints and center support bearing as well,

plus they will rebalance the whole assembly... they need the whole shaft

to do that as well... not just the first section. I also put new rotors on the

front and cleaned and repacked the bearings up front as well... dropped

in another set of injectors... and will probably do a bunch more as well

before this is all completed..... just food for thought... . and more misc

ramblings.....

well

so far someone has offered up a 6-speed and for a seperate charge

a 242 transfer case, i am still thinking about what to do i can find little

information on a six speed conversion but what i did find it looks

like a pain . i havent found a copy of quad 4x4's nv4500 conversion

video and would really like to see it .

thank you for the input so far

I looked into a 6 speed NV5600 conversion... . I think that involves a new starter as well as allot of other items... (flywheel, I believe. . not sure) and it's a whole lot pricier than the 4500 conversion from what I found. www.drivetrain.com actually has the conversion info and what is required for each conversion for our trucks... . Standard does as well. They will line item list out each thing that you need to do for each conversion. From my own recent checking on the matter a 4500 (updated with the fully splined 5th gear shaft, 5th gear, and 5th gear nut) rebuilt is going at around 1-1. 2K and a 5600 around 1. 8K. Conversion kits from Standard and Drivetrain for a 4500 are going at 2300-2400 per... core charge included (500 bucks... . so, no core and that jacks the price up to 2800-2900... and figure a bit for shipping as it's not exactly Overnight material). Check with Standard and with Drivetrain on their sites... they have all of the info that you need... . yeah. . a vido would be better... but, that takes away from colorful explatives while doing the conversion...

well who ever said it would be a rewarding experance,

they must have ment for them thinking about me

out in the culde sac taking that pice of junk out

by myself.

its out and as if the gods where not loughing hard enough

at me, i was hoping to find a

leaky rear main seal... nope bone dry

worn out clutch its got 110,000 miles on it

but no... . still looked close to new (75% or better)

polit bushing broken or worn no still nice and tight

i olny reason i had to pull it was the damn counter shaft

the front counter shaft bearing is no more the seal plug

and a few rollers fell out when i took the bell housing off

so why did it loose that bearing the input is still pretty tight

some teeth broken off but tight (all things considered)

when i pulled the drain plug i drained aprox. 4 qts

(remember when it quit it was dripping on the

street so i lost some at that point) it was over filled

by a quart, on top of the extra for the manual transmission

filter... ... ... ... .

i still think the case may have a crack in it

for sure the counter shaft is gone and so is the input

looks as if the teeth where shaved off.

more when i can think of it ... . oh yea

i do have a few pictures

so what i have found so far... .....

the input bearing spun in its bore

input gear is gone 1 shifter fork is chewed up

than the rain came so i had to stop as i have no real

shop to work in but thats a story in it self. .

I pulled mine out yesterday... . It's in the back of my friends pick up truck and will be headed to Standard Transmission in Ft. Worth for a NV4500 on Monday... I put in a new LUK Rally Clutch that I got from them a year and a half ago... . I had the driveshaft shortened and balanced with new U joints and a new Center Carrier bearing installed as well... . I am anxious to get on the road with the NV4500 ... and actually see how that baby performs..... I am going to trade out with Standard on my Bearing Kit and Synchro kit... I felt like you... I was not sure what was eaten up in my transmission when it went. . outside of bearings and synchros as well... . I want to keep my truck for a long time... so, the NV4500 was the way to go... my pockets weren't deep enough for a 5600..... and with the 5th gear problem straight on the 4500's these days... well. . no reason to. Hopefully by the end of the week I will be back on the road with my truck... I have to pick up furniture in Houston and it will be a good test for the old girl... . I also have to make a trip to SC as well.

I will keep you posted on my progress... . keep us up on yours.
