My brother is in the market for a dodge/cummins he said he wants the 6. 7 , I told him he was nuts , buy a 5. 9. I need your input . That 68re looks hot not to sure about the engine though. Thanks in advance

I've had zero problems but my mileage is low (around 2000 mi. ).

If I had it to do over, I would wait as long as I could, then buy the 6. 7.

Waiting would allow time for D/C to continue the bug-hunting, and the truck would have the latest-greatest "fix" available at the time of purchase.

Everyone seems delighted with the power, auto transmission and especially the exhaust-brake on the new rigs.

A friend at a dealership estimates 95% trouble-free rigs, but whatever the actual number, those with problems are rightfully concerned and vocal.

Good luck! :)

I have a new 2007 5. 9 auto and understand that the 6. 7 drives and shifts nicer until... you have the trans built (Converter, Valve body, etc) and install a Smarty or equivalent. There has been a lot of aftermarket work done to make the 48re a great transmission. You are looking at about $4,000 but the truck feels like it lost 4000 pounds and shifts and drives fantastic (much better than the 6. 7, more like a sports car) the 5. 9 is tried and true with endless possibilities for modifications and better fuel mileage. To me it’s a “no brainer”

And if everyone thought like that the company would be out of business real quick. ( 6. 7 ARE ALL THEY MAKE NOW ).

You are missing the whole point. Right now the 5. 9 is a known quantity, the 6. 7 is not. As far as reliability it is a no brainer at this point in time! The 6. 7 bugs will get worked out in time..... how much time... nobody knows.

9,500+ miles and no problems. :)

350hp and a 6 speed auto transmission that shifts correctly VS. tried and true 5. 9 with an inevitable $4000 dollar trans build.

it was a tough choice for me too. i went with the 5. 9. the deciding factors were basically less moving parts, better fuel economy, and ofcourse price. the difference in price for the choices will pay for my trans build. it'll never be a 6 speed but the properly upgraded 48re is a good unit.

also, if i knew i was going to leave the truck stock, i'd have leaned toward the 6. 7 a little harder.

happy with mine

i am very pleased with my 6. 7 so far . it has a little over 3000 miles now and the power is great . i live in the appalachians and there is one curvy , steep pass that i pull a 13,000 lb. fifth wheel over pretty often . my 04 5. 9 with 3:73's and auto trans. would top the mountain at a maximum of 45 mph . my 6. 7 6 speed manual with 3:73 's will easily top it at 55 mph . this is a very steep two lane pass . the fuel mileage on the 6. 7 is actually doing better than the 5. 9 did .

I am by no means the world's authority on Dodge or Cummins but I am a rather experienced business person and I base my question on that experience.

Why would two companies with so much riding on their reputation decide to replace a known high quality product with a piece of junk?

The '03 Dodge CTD was a major success with few problems. There were many who said it was the end of hop-ups due to the changes, but business people quickly proved that wrong in their pursuit of profit.

My opinion? The 6. 7 is well thought out and a great truck, it will take a year or so for the aftermarket to figure them out and once again you'll be able to hot rod the heck out them.

If he wants a reliable stock truck, go for the 6. 7, if he wants something he can hot-rod right now, go with the 5. 9.

Dodge and Cummins have little interest in building a piece of junk.

If I knew I'd leave the truck's motor stock, I'd be rolling in an '08 Laramie Megacab 3500 or an '08 Laramie Quad Cab Long Bed with the 6. 7 and auto. No question. The new 6-speed and factory e-brake are super cool. I really prefer the bells and whistles on a Laramie, plus the interior trim bits look a lot better. Seating configuration is better as well.

Because I can't leave anything alone, I found an '07 5. 9 I could live with. A couple of interior mods and my truck will be just as nice as a Laramie anyway.

Bottom line-

If you're leaving the motor stock, go with the 6. 7!!!

Answer = Profit margin... . ford, chevy, cadillac, gmc, microsoft, starbucks, anthony's pizzaria... ... . and dodge have done it before

But to put your question back into context (apologies), niether of these trucks are junk.

i don't think anyone would be disatisfied with either of these trucks overall. maybe a detail or two might be troublesome but overall satisfaction is highly likely with either choice.

2100 miles on my Mega w/the 6. 7 6sp auto - I love this thing. My wife is already calling it the other woman. Find an 07. 5 Laramie Mega with every bell & whistle - they are ready to deal on them!! Mileage is a little crappy, but not that bad to most gas trucks running around. I have hand calculated every tank so far (business reasons) and it has already improved somewhat. You can really change it on driving style. Stay under 70 on highways and keep your foot out of it in town, your mileage will dramatically improve!

I find that my 6. 7 get terrible milage, the truck has 37's though, but the over head says 9. 9mpg, I realize that that the truck gets a little better cause the tires throw the calibration off a bit. But even before the tires I only got 11. 2mpg. The truck has 23000 on it so far, so I'm done with hopes that the mileage will improve once it breaks in.

The Dodge part of this duo has always been pretty much junk. Lets face it, no one here is driving these trucks because they're Dodges... if you know what I mean. Look at the first Gens, the same old crude truck forever, they couldn't give them away, enter the CTD & they couldn't meet the demand.

Finally someone telling the truth about the milage!!#@$%! Dealer says "put some miles on it it will get better" I don't think so! All of the past trucks have gotten at least 15mpg in town from the start and did not change much with more milage on them, so what makes this truck different? still love it though!!:D just wished the damn fuel prices would come down!!:{

heard all the horrer stories when I had a '96 12v and bought a '00 24v. Heard all the horror stories when I got my '03 HPCR. Hear all the horror stories on the 6. 7 from Cummins. You kids sound like the PSD crowd. Looking at a 6. 7 right now and still hearing the same old horror stories.

Any one with 37" tall tires has no reason to complaine about bad mpgs or loss of power or ... ... ... ... . ? As always you play your gonna' pay in some way.

When I bought the '03 305/555 HO all the 1st/2nd gen crowd hollored about the same thing "don't buy the first year". The '03 had more power and would put even a 1st gen to shame on 22 + mpgs at 70 + mph. If you doubt Cummins then down grade to a new 6. 4 PSD. Then you will have something to hollor 'bout. I'm a member on 4 different Dodge/Cummins webs and so far have seen nothing that says the new 6. 7 won't be another winner just like the other new tech Cummins have been over the years.

Interesting fact, not just opinion. The 6. 7 comes with a premium ring kit as it has EGR. Exhaust gas with the included SOOT is more abrasive and so they have used the PReMIUM ring kit to insure durability. Also the cylinder walls or the motor are joined together for added strength. Seems like Cummins still cares about it's reputation for quality and durability.

On the fuel economy side. There are several companies that have already delt with the DPF and EGR issues. A month ago I wouldn't have touched a 6. 7. but after really doing the homework I am now the proud owner of an 07 Megacab. And Love it. Can't wait to start bombing it and making better fuel economy.

BTW, I have heard that with just a little added timing it really helps the economy issue, and that would be without making more smoke. For those that want the extra power but don't want to mess with emissions stuff, there will be plenty of options. And from the look of things it won't take long to start seeing those options. This coming right from the chat around SEMA yesterday. We will see.

But no regrets for buying the new truck.
