I've made some improvements to the original fuel tank vent kit. The kit now relocates the vent from the lower part of the tank to the raised part of the tank with a new 3/4" vent line. The stock vent line is capped off. This eliminates the "T" fitting and makes installation a little easier. The new kit vents as well as the old kit or maybe a little better. It seems like it takes 10-15 seconds less to fill the tank so you can see fuel in the neck.

The parts in the kit are resistant to diesel fuel at a wide range of temps. This proved to be the hardest part of redesigning the kit as most materials that simple bulkhead fittings are made of are not resistant to diesel fuel. Some are, but only to temps 72 degrees F and below. I consulted multiple chemical resistance charts to make sure that everything would work with diesel fuel. You can see pics of the new install in my reader's rigs pics.

Dave I installed your before improved vent kit and have not refilled yet. I have a 70 gal Transferflo aux in bed tank and it uses the factory vent hose to refill the oem tank. I had to modify the Tee connection to allow use of the Transferflo Tee already installed so I have two Tees installed. I would like to use a four way connector but didn't take the time to find one. I don't expect any problems but will find out when I refill my OEM tank.

Sorry guys but I'v got to ask. Whats the reason for this mod?

so you don't spend like 10 min trying to top up your fuel tank. with the mod in place, once it clicks off, you've only got seconds to fill it to the cap...

Dave, still have not installed your original kit. Can I use any parts of it to do what the new kit does, outside of buying what, a cap to plug off the original port on the tank. I also was looking for a 4 port tee seeing as that is where I have my aux. tank filling up the main one.

MMeier,

The new kit runs a new 3/4" vent line to the metal vent line on the fuel fill door. You could run your aux tank straight into the stock vent line and avoid a tee fitting altogether. The tank would be vented through the new line and the old vent would become the new fill line for the aux tank. I've never installed an aux tank, but It sounds like it would work.

GoCarGo, not cutting you off or anything, but read the links. All the information is there and most, if not all, of your questions will be answered. For what it's worth, you'll like filling up at truck stops a lot more post-mod than before.

Spooled up... I toasted the little vent on the high part of the tank for my inlet for the fast-fill vent. Are you aware of any other vent in the whole system that would keep the tank from caving in or such? I have a second tank (passenger saddle) that feeds into the old vent line but now am worried about not equilizing pressure from pump suction and don't want to hurt the pump. When I take the cap off I don't sense any sucking or such. Any ideas? George

Will this tank-kit modification allow me to fill my truck at the high-flow Truck Stop Pumps?

The vent and fittings are all the same size as stock. If you're having trouble filling at truck stops, It probably won't change that. It will reduce the amount of time it takes to top off dramatically though. I always felt like I was holding up the works when I sat there trickling fuel in.

I'm not aware of another vent in the system other than the stock one. If you're using the stock vent hose as a fill hose from your aux tank, you could install the kit and vent the tank normally to the metal vent on the fill door. I'm not sure what you mean by "toasted", but I do know what little vent your talking about. I don't actually think it's a vent though. I tried to blow air into it and couldn't get anything. I didn't try pulling any air out of it though.

Thanks. I run the vent line to a fabbed inlet on my flatbed so the vent is closed-looped back into the system and only functions when the cap is off and filling. "Toasted" is what you think... I cut it out and used the spot for the high hole for the new vent line. I need to find the Dodge schematics for the fuel system. Thanks for your response. George

Thats actually a very good question. You see everyone who doesn't have this kit either thinks there tank is full when the nozzle clicks off or they spend 10 minutes drizzling the extra 3. 5 gallons in.

What happens is a big air pocket is left in the tank due to the OE location of the vent line. This kit fixes that so when the nozzle clicks off the tank really IS full.

Very true, and one of the cautions Dave makes is that you DON't want to fill the tank and let the truck sit in the hot sun... with a FULL tank! Am following this tread very closely since I have the kit on it's way, and have an in-bed Transfer-flo as well. This is one of those improvements that is so simple that the factory should have done it in the first place. Thanks Dave!

Good job on the research, I'll see if my BH fitting gives me grief in the future. Knock on wood, it's been good to -25F and not much warmer than 80F at this point. On my shortbox, I just filled it with 36. 7 gallons yesterday which is more than when I put my kit in. On the fast fill pumps, I have to wipe the side of the the truck if I fill it too fast. :( It seems to not vent fast enough to keep the fuel from splashing out after the nozzle kicks off.
