In regards to replacing the Stock VP44, is it best to stick to a stock/reman replacement VP44 or upgrade the injection pump to one of the "hot roded" injection pumps?

What upgrades would one need to have on their engine to necessitate the need for an upgraded/hot roded injection pump?

Also is there anything that needs to be adjusted after a VP44 replacement?

Thanks for the input.

I replaced my APPS with Timbo's about 5 yrs ago with no problems and 4 yrs ago I had a VP44 die because of low fuel pressure from the third lift pump failure and I used BlueChip X - series pump with the stock injectors (origional 99 CTD with 190kat that time) still doing just fine and did just what Chip says it will do in his ad/literature, slight increase in power and mileage, and now has over 226 k miles. most with trailer behind, but just truck with 4 wheeler in back last week on 400 mile trip in mountain driving, never more than 75mph the lie-o-meter said 23.2 and real fill up computation was 21.8 all above 7200 ft elevation, :)

If you are going start adding power to a 24v then:
Gauges
transmission/torque converter upgrade
Injectors
Turbo
Box or chip to fool over boost
Exhaust to cool.
Exhaust brake and smart controller to keep torque converter lock.

Very slippery slope. We are at more $$ invested than the truck is worth.

My understanding is the Smart Controller is not available, sad but true ?.

6naline01, on the 2nd gen (99) APPS is above the VP44 where the injector lines (6) are comming out of. Follow the throttle cable! APPS is a piece of cake to change and calibrate, you need a Digital voltmeter (Harbor Freight will do) and follow the directions and there are good threads here on TDR and you can go to Blue Chip sight and he has a wealth of instructions for most parts change out and calibration procedures. Also I would bet that Geno's has instructions and I know Timbo (Timbo APPS site) has a good set.

6naline01, My APPS on the 02 is located behind the backing plate for the throttle cable covers. Drivers side above the injection pump, remove the plastic cover and you'll see the mounting bolts.

S Tango, Get on Blue Chip site and read about replacement and his pumps warranty, I have had good luck with his X series replacement on my stock 99 going on 40k now.

The only down side to the Special X is it eliminates the ability to play with tuners as the timing has already been cranked up on the X pumps. No biggie if you never have any intentions on running any programmers but otherwise you would be ahead performance wise to order a standard SO VP and run your tuner of choice
