I have searched 20 pages but I just can't find the answer! I have a pioneer head unit and I have the trim out of the rear of the cab so thought it would be a good time to upgrade the speakers from the facory infinity units. I need to know which wires are the 'speaker' wires as there are 4 (in a multiplug) and if i can even do this keeping the front infinities for the time being? help much apreciated!

First off, the factory speakers are 2 ohm impedance. If you are keeping the original radio you will need speakers with that impedance. And they might be hard to fine.

My 2001 FSM shows two wires for the rear speaker. In any case, there's no point changing the rear speakers. The infinity system adds a 30W x 2 amp to each front door speaker that powers the front and rear on each side. From the head unit the left side goes to the front door and from there to the rear speaker and A-pillar tweeter. Ditto for the right. I've read here that you can replace the Infinity head unit and it should be fine but you need an output from the head unit to power the door amps. Most head units have a signal for external amplifiers.

Using a higher impedance aftermarket speaker should be fine (I think most are 4 ohm) but you'll need to use old fashioned trial and error to figure out which wires do what.

I went to several radio shops to replace my radio and speakers. All suggested I leave the rear speakers alone. They stated the rear speakers were only fillers and have very little to do with sound quality. Sounded strange to me, but why else would they turn down business. I went with a pioneer radio and 6x9 front speakers. Please let us know if you notice any improvement in your sound quality with your rear speakers. Good luck
