I am planning on ordering a 05 Ram 3500 quad cab 4x4 and I would like to know what type of problems if any might be happening with the 48re transmission. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

From what I'm reading and by a couple than run in our group their an excellent unit and perform very well stock both in the Standard Output (SO) aswell as the High Output (HO). Now as with any Auto if you plan on turning the Cummin up plan on modifying the trans when planning out the cost. You havn't mentioned what if anything you will be hauling/towing but my 05 325/610 is more than enough for my 10K plus Toy Box . I prefer the DRW with 4:10's for added hauling capacity but that is a whole different topic which draws a lot different opinions on this site. I suggest you plan ahead and ask yourself "will I be hauling heavier someday" get the big guy and be done with it!!!! :-laf I am on my second. But all in all the 48RE has real good driving characteristics the shifts are firm and positive and the Tacks lock up totally predictable and strong. Hope I helped a little.

I appreciate the info. I'm upgrading from a 1/2 ton gasser so I kinda feel im getting the "big guy". The truck will be used for hauling quads and a couple of other things. I dont' plan on much modifications to the truck and i plan on going with the 4. 10's.

Thanks and keep the info coming.

Hey JV

You know I forgot to mention that the 4:10's are a must IMO with the auto. You will be fine with SRW you are going to love the truck!!!. Where are you located we are in So Ca and ride every other weekend.

PS. My buddy Andy has the the same truck only a six speed. Check out readers rigs "plisstrds I6" 05 3500 SRW 4X4 Laramie

From where I sit 410's have just about no business behind an inline 6. I got stuck with the 373's on this one and now wish I had my 355's back. These little tires and the high torque rise make 410's make no sense for most. I ran 22k as a rule when towing in the past with 355's and 265/75 rubber with less torque. [520 flywheel] This combo was great loaded or empty if you ran drive @ 65 or less and o/d over that. My transmission had 125k without a rebuild when I traded it but it did have a valve -body and suncoast tc.

Do not by a dually unless you actually need it and save the 410's for the v8's.

I live and ride in Arizona. I figured I would be fine with the plans i have. I was just checking on the reliability of the transmission. It appears that you have had good luck with your truck.

I appreciate the info and keep it coming.

Juicedcummins

I appreciate the info and i was looking into the 4. 10's becuase i had plans on putting a leveling kit with a taller tire. I figured that would kinda tame the gears out a bit and help with that situation.

I wasn't into the dually and i think what i'm getting into will fill the bill.

How does your new truck pull?

Thanks for the info and throw more my way.

4. 10s have no place in these trucks. I drove one and it was an absolute dog. 3. 73s all the way. Chevy/Ford should offer 4. 10s with their V8s though, and they DON'T!!

Alright Alright!!! Want a flame?.

Tell you what take two trucks with the same weight and power in tow and race from 2nd thru 6th the 4:10 truck will kick a** on the 3:73 truck every time!. I do it all the time. There are two with the 3:73's that run in our group and when fully loaded can't get out of their own way when trying to build speed up hill. Buy the 3:73's if you plan on hualing groceries and commuting back and fourth to work not if your going to be hauling IMO.

P. S Tim how come you have no sig I'll bet you drive a dakota :{ .

If you are talking automatic 4. 10s are the only gears to have, these engines pull best above 2000rpm, with the 4. 10s you will be spinning 2150rpm at 70mph with stock tires. 70mph is a little fast for me when towing so I often drop to 3rd on hills as it get's out of the power once below 2000rpm.

If you are also planning on putting larger tires on you definetly want 4. 10s. Running empty with 4. 10s the rpms can get up there, it won't hurt it anything, but 2500rpm can get loud and buzzy on a long trip, that is the only time I would want to have 3. 73s.

I agree with you and Macdaddy about the 4. 10's and the automatic. I've been in a truck that has the 3. 73's and the 6 speed and that was plenty of power. I'm looking at the automatic due to the fact that other family members must drive this vehicle. Have you had any reliability issues with this transmission?

Thanks for the info and keep it coming.

I have 3. 73s in my dually with a 48RE and am considering a US Gear overdrive to get the RPMs down at 70MPH (1925 to 1540) for better mileage.

JVakdaz, If you plan on running large rubber 410's have their place. If you want to tow a 5'ver be carefull and do your homework. These trucks are plenty too high for a lot of the trailers already.

My 05 hasn't been hooked up yet so I can not say how it does with a load. My But-o-meter says about 280hp to the ground. I am really hoping for a reflash to get the o/d lockout back. It would be nice to have both tow/haul and o/d off as options.

No problems so far, I have just over 25k miles, hopefully it will remain problem free, the 6 speed with the 3. 73s ends up having very close to the same final drive ratio as the 4. 10s with the auto.
