BPINE - we all could use a few friends like you... what a pal. Be careful not to get sucked into the air filter when Dave starts to build boost. Remember to wear your fall harness when attempting work like this. You can clip onto the lifting eye on the front of the engine. :D

DLBurns - it's not really the horsepower that kills the auto trannys, it's the torque. The components, unless beefed up, can't take the torque developed by the mighty Cummins. Your horsepower went up 85, but the torque went up about 160lb/ft. Add the hp/tq from the EZ and you've significantly increased stress to the transmission over stock. I'm no transmission expert, however there are many on this site that could tell you whether the upgrade to your transmission will hold the power, torque, and towing weight (12K pounds) you're throwing at it. Call Suncoast to get their input on your setup.

Hope you get the two problems worked out.

Dwayne

Blair is the BEST, and I tied him onto the fender real good. Gonna have to get him a drag chute though, I'm afraid if he fell off of there at 90 MPH he will shoot into orbit as little as he is! ;)

Blair is going to check his notes and see what trans setup I have ( I bought the parts from him )

Thanks again Dwayne!

Moved the EZ jumper to level 1 on Tuesday, went for a short run and am seeing considerably less smoke.

I'll have to take it out on the Performance Diesel test track ( Hwy 85 ) and see what the EGT's are now!

We also tested the pyro and found the Isspro to be reading about 150° higher than a new Hewitt gauge??

I emailed Isspro about the problem and have not heard back from them!

still

If your Isopro is the one with an amp. there a 1/4 turn adjustment to correct the high reading.

Just got an email from Scott at Isspro detailing the instructions to adjust the reading using that very screw!

Thanks

Dave

Well I checked the temps yesterday at idle with an IR thermometer, the Isspro gauge was reading right at 275° at Idle, my IR showed 270° at the EGT probe on the manifold???

I guess the gauge isn't off after all. Now it's back to the drawing board.

Thanks... ... I don't think Blair will fit under the dash to adjust the pyro sender while I am driving 90 down the Performance Diesel test track:rolleyes:

Looks like I am gonna have to wait until I can get it on a dyno #@$%!

I might fit but don't ask !!!!!

If it wasn't so much trouble I would say send it back to Ispro and have it calibrated, we need to think about this in the meantime drive it like you stole it.

I'm leaving it in the driveway until I get this thing figured out?

Have you heard from Bob or Don regarding the phantom injectors?????

Dave,

I am confused about something.

Are you only pulling grades at 27mph in second because the truck is out of power... or because your backing out of it to keep the egt's to 1200?

I have lots of power, recently dynoed at 340Hp and 780 Ft/lbs torque. I just can't use any of it because of the freakin high egt's.

Dave

You stated that the new hewit gauge read 150 degrees cooler. If that's right, and i suspect it is... you were pulling those grades at 1050 pre turbo all along and just need to push the pedal down further to use the extra power and get your combo moving up the hills faster.

Please let us know if 27mph is on the floor or because your trying to control egt's. (sorry if you've already said and i overlooked it).

Thanks,

Chris

Yes Chris I was pulling at 27 in 2nd gear because I was pushing 1350° in 3rd gear at 40 MPH, had to downshift to get my boost back up. I still had pedal to spare but EGT's were holding me back!

IF the gauge is reading wrong and the Hewitt is reading correctly, your right, I have a little more room than I thought. Still not 100% convinced that the gauge is the only problem here!

As I have to store my 5th wheel away from my home I can't just make a change and hook it up to test it out, it's somewhat of a PITA.

Isspro emailed me the instructions to adjust the reading on the gauge but without a dyno it's going to be hard to do. The gauge is almost dead on at idle when I measured it against my IR thermometer, I've been told that I need to get it up to power to see the real difference in readings.

I guess I may just have to stuff old Blair under the dash and have him adjust the screw as I holler out the temp readings to him :-{}

Either that or break down and buy a new gauge from Isspro  I wonder if Isspro will buy me a new motor if I fry a piston based on the adjustments they suggest I make

I think if I had a pyro from every manufacturer, I would have different readings on each of them!

Were going to keep working on this!

Dave,

Do you still have access to the Hewitt gauge you mentioned earlier... to try it out for a while? That would at least let you explore the faulty pyrometer gauge theory without spending any money.

If you have good boost, good power, and the smoke is clearing up under boost... seems like you should be getting egt's very similar to everyone elses.

I have isspro gauges in both of my trucks, and i can tell you the only thing i like about them is that they match the factory gauges pretty well. Mine have not been reliable for me. From the info youve given my guess is still the egt gauge.

Please keep this thread up to date as you troubleshoot this problem. I'm very interested in how it works out for you.

Good luck,

Chris

One other thought...

Looking at your signature, i see that you have an afe listed. Is that just an afe filter in the stock airbox, or a megacannon intake?

If it's a megacannon intake, that is not your problem.

If it's just a stock style drop in replacement, is your filterminder getting sucked down? Could be possible that you are starving for air because of the stock airbox itself being to restrictive for the power your making. At one time, a few years ago, i was running dd2's, comp box and stock air intake. If i hammered it from a stop, my egt's would hit 1500 before i could get to 60mph. I added a AFE megacannon and wouldn't hit 1500 until almost the end of the quarter mile which was over 90mph. All of this was with the stock hy35 9cm turbo, with the wastegate disabled. I could make almost 40 pounds of boost either way... but with the stock airbox my egt's were much much much higher.
