I've been think about making some mods to my '01. 5. I'm trying to decide if it is better to go with new injectors or a box like the EdgeEZ. I was looking at Diesel Dynamics stage 1 and they offer about the same hp increase as the EZ, but the injectors say that they will improve mpg too. That would definately be an added plus. I'm trying to find out which will offer the biggest bang for my buck or which offers the most flexibility for future mods. I would rather instal the right thing once than instal the wrong thing twice!

Depends what your looking to do with your truck. If you are towing, injectors are a good upgrade with "smooth" power across the board. Though most do not stay with their first set of injectors because they want more power.

A box is easy to program in your desired HP level and leaves more time for you to decide how big of injector's you would really be happy with. Though a box will probably give higher overall egt's. Either way make sure you get a egt with either one. Box will also do better for controlling smoke if your not upgrading your turbo.

Do the EZ! Best bang for your buck IMHO. I started with the EZ & boost elbow and it made a very noticeable difference. I just installed DD II's and with the EZ it's awesome.

Beware, once you get on the slope it gets very slippery..... :D :D

First things first, fill in the sig so people know what you have.

That being said, maybe this will help narrow things down a bit.

Injectors alone will react better in an HO, but you need a boost fooler to really get the most out of em. If you're mechanically inclined it's a good way to go. These are supposed to be a smoother on the powerband from what I understand. If you keep these tame, you can prob get away w/o transmission upgrades.

Timing boxes are supposed to react better to an SO. You can hook these things up in a couple minutes and be on your way. It seems to have been popular trend to get these at first, then sell iit in the classifieds, HINT HINT, and upgrade to some kind of fueling box. The timing box alone shouldn't require transmission work.

Planning on future mods, I would put my money on injectors, seeing how those just get better with boxes.

If you search on this you will find enough info to make your eyes bleed.

Thanks for all the info. I've heard good and bad about the box. The biggest complaint seems to be that it comes on too hard and chews up the clutch. As far as injectors smoke has always been mentioned. My truck seems to give a pretty fair amout of smoke now, more so that others I've seen arround town. Can't figure out what gives there... I don't do a lot of towing but I do live at 7000 ft and the elevation tends to sap a lot of power. I would like to do some mild mods (hoping to save my stock clutch), however I tend to drive hard and really put my foot into it when I get the oppertunity and I know that will chew my clutch faster than anything.

Oh yea here's my sig too:

2001. 5 HO, 2500, 4X4, QC, LB, 6 spd, 4" straight pipe, K&N intake, leveling kit, 305 Goodyear's

I have a very similar truck. In the last couple of months I have installed both an EZ & Don M's mach 1. 5 EDM's. The EZ is like it says easy! Just plug it in & zoom! It works very well but does come on fast. I set mine on jumper #1 to keep smoke down. The EDM's are more expensive & a lot more fuss to install but the power delivery is smoother & they put out maybe 20 hp more than the EZ. Neither device alone was to much for my stock clutch but together I have to be cautious with my right foot. The combination will put out more power than the clutch will hold in the mid range. Both devices also improved the mileage slightly!

Go with EDM 1. 0 or 1. 5's AND the box. To save money, unless you will not do any additional mods - which is unlikely - get an in-cab adjustable box (like the Edge Comp) and keep her on level 1. When you want to get a bigger Southbend setup then you can use the other levels. I had an EZ before the Comp and from my experience - the Comp on 1 has much more performance than the EZ I had - which was one I purchased in 2001.

Edge EZ is ok but you won't be happy for long. I had EZ for 2 weeks and then got TST powermax3. Get the best you can afford, you will sooner or later anyhow.

MRiley, you first need to decide how far you want to go in the HP game. Buy low now and you'll be upgrading later.

The EZ makes about 40-45hp on an ETH (HO truck), where the Stage 1's make 65hp.

My suggestion is to start with a box, so you get the boost fooling right off the bat. If you think a max of 350hp is reasonable, the EZ/TTPM will get you there with up to Stage 3 injectors later. If you think you'll be wanting more than that down the road, get the UFM/COMP now instead of the EZ.

I agree with Keith, get a box first. With injector's and no boost fooler, you stand a chance of setting an over boost code. Both the EZ and the Comp box act as a boost fooler.

I would get a UFM with the HO ( a little less timing). Then when you replace the clutch you can either tap the pump wire, or add injectors. The UFM/Comp also allows you to control the smoke better, and you can shut if off if you want.

ok, so dumb question why do I need a boost fooler to get the most out of injectors??? Would injectors alone just create an over fueling type situation? I'm new to the diesel word and trying to undersatnd what makes it go and what makes it go faster!

Your turbo is wastegated at about 20psi, and your computer will normally throw a code if boost rises above that. However, you need more than 20 psi boost to burn all the extra fuel provided by most bigger injectors at high throttle levels.

By modifying the wastegate so it opens at a higher boost, and "fooling" the computer so it never sees higher than 20psi (which is what the box/module does), you're all set to burn the extra fuel.

I agree on the save money! Get stage 2 injectors EDM 1. 5 or DD2's whatever 80-85 HP anyway.

I started with an EZ then 275 injectors (Approx. +40HP injectors ), the EZ and 275's didn't last a year before being replaced by Mach 1. 5 EDM's and a Comp box.

I have a friend with an HO, he has one mod (other than gauges) BD 90 HP injectors... stock turbo and all.

If I had your HO that would be my first mod. This truck runs great!

Chances are you'll be like the rest of us... However I was told the same thing and didn't listen:rolleyes:

"I've been think about making some mods to my '01. 5. " = The beginning... do you like slippery slopes?

"I was looking at Diesel Dynamics stage 1" = Might as well get DD2's... Really trust me! Bang for the buck thing again!

"trying to find out which will offer the biggest bang for my buck or which offers the most flexibility for future mods. I would rather instal the right thing once than instal the wrong thing twice"! = HO... one mod only... Injectors! (IMHO)

Have fun "get gauges first", remove the fuel restriction "Banjo bolts" and put away some cash for the clutch.
